What to do about FBI report

[edit]

Dear Wikipedians,

Willard Oliver, author of a comprehensive biography of August Vollmer, has written in private correspondence that he researched the topic of Vollmer being involved in a Nazi sympathizer group in 2015, when that reference was first added to the Vollmer Wikipedia page, and there is no evidence that the Vollmer in the FBI list is the same person. I would prefer to remove that whole paragraph, which would also remove the "citation needed" for the statement I added,"However, he was living in Berkeley at the time, not at the Los Angeles address in the list, and he is known to have strongly disapproved of the Nazis' militarization of the police." Another researcher found in 1930 and 1940 censuses on Ancestry.com that the August Vollmer at the LA address was German born and ran a bakery. So should I somehow cite that reference (I'm not an Ancestry.com member), or cite the Oliver book, when I can get a page ref, for the latter part of the above sentence, or should I just remove the whole paragraph and leave this entry on the talk page for anyone who is curious? We are concerned about this as board members of the Berkeley Historical Society, which is getting ready to open an exhibit on Vollmer.)

Sorry I didn't look closely at this before. I've removed the FBI material as blatant WP:Original research. Perhaps you'll do James J. Kenney next! EEng 00:50, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Military service corrected

Hello all. At least four independent sources have listed Vollmer as having served in the United States Army ("Private G Battery U.S. Artillery," according to this source: https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/Digitization/68880NCJRS.pdf), not the Marine Corps. Reputable source added to reference list. WhampoaSamovar (talk) 23:03, 22 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
