Restoration

[edit]

Atlanta Cyclorama needs restoration, maybe much more some contend City's tourism execs, historians, inspired by renovation of Gettysburg exhibit. Sept 14, 2008. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/living/stories/2008/09/14/atlanta_cyclorama_restoration.html rumjal 03:38, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Logan

[edit]

Does anyone have a reliable source for the claim that the Atlanta Cyclorama was commissioned to aid the political fortunes of John Logan? He was nominated for Vice President in 1884; he was already dead for a year by the time the cyclorama opened in Detroit in 1887. It was a commercial venture. It's not implausible that its backers were favorably disposed to Logan, or that they were trying to cash in on his political prominence by featuring him in their painting. But did he commission it?

You are kidding

[edit]

No mention in this article of WHO painted this, or that it is the work of which artists or collaboration? I personally saw this Cyclorama multiple times in the 1960's and it was extraordinarily impressive, in the days before IMAX. Who created it, with paint and brush? They need to be recognized, because it was a phenomenal civic achievement.Starhistory22 (talk) 01:07, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The painting was executed by the American Panorama Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, headed by William Wehner. There were 13 artists who worked on it, supervised by F. W. Heine and August Lohr. The Museum of Wisconsin Art has archived information about the American Panorama Company in general and about the Atlanta Cyclorama in particular if you want to pursue that. You would either have to go there in person or hire a researcher to photocopy or scan the documents and send them to you via email or whatever. There will be fees involved either way. Their web site is: http://www.wisconsinart.org/archives/topic/panorama-companies-and-painters-44.aspx

Incidentally, there was a very detailed description of the creation and history of the painting at one time in this article. It listed every artist who worked on it. It was taken verbatim from www.atlantacyclorama.org, which is fine as far as I know, except that the site wasn't cited as a reference. Someone editing the article then simply deleted the entire section rather than adding the citation, and the article has remained like that since 2013. That edit was listed as follows:
