"Palestinian resistence movement" is biased language.
Calling Hamas a resistence movement is highly biased language
"Haniyeh was a prominent figure within the Palestinian resistance movement since 1980." Especially considering it is considered a terrorist organisation by much of the western world. More appropriate wording would be "prominent within the Hamas movement" Yadinbro (talk) 05:38, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Even if so, I wonder who the hell made him a member of Hamas 7 years before it was founded. Borgenland (talk) 05:43, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Move
@Blackorchidd, @WeatherWriter, please don't move this page unilaterally. Start a WP:RM if you need to. Consider that "Murder of" might also be an option given it is being considered both a violation of local (Iranian) law and international law.VR (Please ping on reply) 11:51, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Agree, and undiscussed moves should be reverted. This was assassination, and we have already had a similar discussion at Talk:Assassination of Qasem Soleimani. Feel free to move back as I can't do that myself due to 1RR. — kashmīrī TALK 11:56, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Schwede66 since you move protected the page, can you determine which title it should remain at pending an RM? It was started at "killing of". I can't tell if it was a stub or not when it was moved to "assassination of".VR (Please ping on reply) 12:35, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- I don't mind. The important part is that we don't have redirects from the main page, hence if it gets moved, the admin should also adjust the ITN item. Schwede66 12:43, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Killing of Ismail Haniyeh → Assassination of Ismail Haniyeh – Leader of an organization was killed. By definition, an assassination. Following nearly 6+ unchallenged hours of the title being “assassination”, an undiscussed move occurred to change it to “killing”, despite a very obvious WP:COMMONNAME for “assassination”. Can we get a speedy close for this to revert this undiscussed move?
Uses for “assassination”:
- Associated Press
- CNN
- Al Jazeera — Pro-Hamas
- TIME
- The Jerusalem Post — Pro-Israel
- Reuters — Reactions: Includes foreign heads calling it “assassination”.
- BBC
- Fox News
- CBS News
- Forbes
- The Washington Post
- Haaretz
- Euronews
- NDTV
- Indian Express
- Axios
I will say, it appears NBC News does not actually say “assassination” and only “killed”, however, they include foreign head reactions which have “assassination” 8 times in their article. Still, a clear COMMONNAME/COMMONSTerm for “assassination”. I could go on listing news articles, but those above should be enough to revert this undiscussed move away from “assassination”. ” As far as Wikipedia’s reliable source policy is, they are partisan and anti-Israel…I.e. pro-Hamas/pro-Palestine. That part isn’t up for debate as it is fairly obvious they are partisan. The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 12:38, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Quote needs cleanup
Implemented
The quote: "Khamenei later stated that "we consider it our duty to seek revenge for his [Haniyeh's] blood as he was 'martyred' in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran." should not include the single quotation mark around the word "martyred". Were those added for editorial irony? Not sure.
There should also be three periods before "we", as it's only part of the quote. The quote, as it appears in the source without being altered, is: "With this action, the criminal and terrorist Zionist regime prepared the ground for harsh punishment for itself, and we consider it our duty to seek revenge for his blood as he was martyred in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran." --Greens vs. Blacks (talk) 15:39, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- It was probably originally added because the government of iran tends to overuse martyr , but it doesnt seem objectionable in Haniye's case.
- I removed it and added the full quote as Khamenei's opinion would be pretty important as Head of state of Iran AlexBobCharles (talk) 16:10, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Claimed "failed verification"
@AlexBobCharles: in this edit, you claimed that the Source doesnt support statement
, even though it clearly states:
Haniyeh struck by a ‘missile from abroad’
Lebanese Al-Mayadeen TV reported that Ismail Haniyeh was struck by a missile launched from outside Iran. “The martyrdom of Haniyeh by a missile from abroad constitutes an act of aggression against Iran and demands a response,” it reported, quoting an Iranian source.
The Telegraph cannot independently confirm the report and Iran said the attack is under investigation.

Misquote of Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani
I'm too junior an editor to make this change myself, but there's a typo / quoting error in the quote from Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.
The article currently quotes him saying: "How can mediation succeed when one side assassinates negotiator on other side?" This is grammatically incorrect, and is not the actual quote; it's just the headline of the article cited.
The actual quote from the article is: "How can mediation succeed when one party assassinates the negotiator on other side?" Elected?
The article says in the lede and somewhere else that the individual was "elected" head of Hamas political bureau. I can't find this supposed election anywhere online, nor in the article about this Hamas political bureau. In fact ABC says he merely "became" the head, according to the U.S. government. Similarly The New York Times fuzzily says he "had been heading Hamas’s political faction". Al Jazeera says "an independent [from PA] Hamas-led government in the Gaza Strip [was] headed by Haniyeh" without explaining how this came about. I think this should be stricken unless a reliable source can be found right away. ☆ Bri (talk) 23:14, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- The body cites BBC at end of paragraph, which says "elected." Levivich (talk) 23:41, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hamas regularly announces (2012, 2017, 2021) that they've held elections to select new people for each post. These are party conventions, not primaries, and no one knows exactly who comprises the electorate. GordonGlottal (talk) 23:42, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Update on Mohammed Deif
In the "Killing of Hamas Officials" section it mentions some doubt about whether or not Mohammed Deif was killed in the airstrike. The IDF have confirmed (1st August) that he was indeed killed. Can someone change this section? His personal page Mohammed Deif also is in the past tense, so it makes sense to update his information on this page too. שי - LionFireKing404 11:53, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

The infobox of the article has the names of both people who were assasinated. I suggest adding "(Hamas leader)" to "Ismail Haniyeh", and adding "(bodyguard)" to "Wassim Abu Shaaban". Although the article does say that Shaaban was Haniyeh's bodyguard, the infobox telling you this as well would be nice, so a reader doesn't have to look at the article again. -Waterard

The Maldives has issued a brief statement condemning the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the Chief of the Political Bureau of Hamas, following criticism over the delay in addressing the matter. On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement affirming the government's condemnation of the assassination. The statement emphasized the Maldives' call for all nations to adhere to international and humanitarian laws and to collaborate urgently to find a lasting resolution to the Gaza crisis, aiming to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Notably, on the same day that Haniyeh was assassinated, President Muizzu had expressed condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the tragic landslides in Wayanad. [1] However, the Maldivian government did not release any statement about Haniyeh’s assassination until the following day, leading to significant public scrutiny over the timing of its response [2] AnonymousMDV (talk) 21:23, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
