Viking or Norse
[edit]User:Beyond My Ken prefers the term Vikings, but, to me, that has the connotation of seafaring invaders. The farmers who came to Askrigg are more usually referred to as Norse settlers in historical documents. What does anyone else think? Dbfirs 10:06, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- In situations like this I'd refer to what the sources say (if anyone has access - they're published sources). Яehevkor ✉ 11:34, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, that sounds fair, but which documents do we follow? Also see Norsemen#Other names. The people who came to this part of Yorkshire were farmers, not seafarers. Dbfirs 19:00, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- The two sources attached to the statement are Askrigg#cite_note-5 and Askrigg#cite_note-6 if anyone is able to verify them. Яehevkor ✉ 19:07, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- I think those two sources just confirm that the name "Askrigg" is of Old Norse origin. That fact is undisputed. My question was whether the settlers are better described as Norse rather than Viking. Dbfirs 07:23, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
