Plaque

[edit]

I just removed the sentence stating that the front of the pedestal has a plaque in English+Swahili by Rudyard Kipling. I did insert that statament at the time, based on sources found on the Internet, but there is evidence (look at the pic at the biggest size available) that (at least today) the plaque has a sentence in swahili and in arabic and no english, at least on the front. No mention of Rudyard Kipling is made, too. I was tempted to restate the sentence as "has a dedication in both swahili and arabic" but unfortunately I can't tell if the latter is actually arabic or swahili in arabic alphabet (if that makes any sense today: it used to). If any wikipedians from (or visiting) Dar could check better or give advice, that would be most welcome. Moongateclimber (talk) 17:38, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It would also be nice to have a translation of the dedication; I could do that myself, given lots of time :-) and possibly will, but if any fluent swahili speaker jumps by... Moongateclimber (talk) 17:40, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have added the wording of the English inscription "If you fight for your country even if you die your sons will remember your name" from the photo. I presume the Swahili is the same text but have not added that as no reliable source. Nedrutland (talk) 20:22, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What happened to the Wissman monument???

[edit]

Hello, I was reading this when I noticed that it said the Wissmann statue was destroyed when the British entered the area in 1916. However, this is not true as you can see here: http://www.afrika-hamburg.de/english.html . Just Google the Wissmann monument, and you can see photos of the statue over the years (it was definitely not destroyed in 1916). The site is obviously very biased against Colonialism, but at least it shows the statue was not destroyed. Perhaps the article should be edited? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Otto1943 (talkcontribs) 04:34, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
