No Artaxarta
[edit]There is no Artaxarta. Ref:
- M. Chahin, The Kingdom of Armenia Dorset Press, ISBN 0-88029-609-7
- V. Kurkjian, A History of Armenia, Armenian General Benevolent Union of America, 1963.
Like everyone else I could find no sign of Artaxarta anywhere, which is surprising, as it is being touted as a capital city. Google turns up only the Wikipedia article repeated over and over (like some kind of electromechanical idiot) and mention of the place in Internet games, such as Total War. What tipped me off is this statement in a game dialogue:
"I played as Armenia and I saw that the capital should be Artaxata, not Artaxarta."
Going to the Italian site I saw there Marcus Aurelius and Priscus in association with Artaxarta and the years 160, 163. My Italian is minimal but I noticed a lot of the names were not spelled correctly. So I went to my two books, which are good ones and are listed above and found no Artaxarta at all. I did find Artaxata (Greek) and its Armenian name Artashat, which was a capital and was sacked by Marcus Aurelius' general Priscus in 163.
It seems pretty certain to me that Artaxarta is Artaxata and there is a Wikipedia article on that. Moreover this article says nothing at all you can't find in the other. That Italian link, look at the trouble it caused, and it isn't even in English. So I just deleted the whole thing and redirected to Artaxata just in case some variant of the name turns up. And, the whole previous is commented out below just in case my action seems premature.Dave 02:09, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Former article
[edit]Well, OK, I guess I do not have privileges to do that. But, somebody should do it. If you want to leave it hanging there a while longer it is very simple to put back.Dave 02:16, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Founding of Artaxata
[edit]When was Artaxata founded? The text says 176 BC and 185 BC. --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 07:43, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
