Pronunciation of Name
[edit]I know his name isn't said with a 'see' sound, but does anybody know a credible source for how his name is correctly pronounced?
Arsenio comes from the ancient Greek root "αρσεν-" (arsen-) which implies "male", eg "αρσενικός" (arsenikόs) which translates to "maleness", "masculinity", etc. Therefore the e should be pronounced short (as in end) not long as in 'see'. But in the United States mostly because of people's ignorance and the fact that Americans speak English in the most unhomogenized way, has standardized the latter wrong version of pronunciation.
Blandness
[edit]The article seems a little bland. I watched arsenio for its full run (I am a white guy from Canada with an adopted black brother) and I will swear on a stack of bibles that the situation with Jay is worth adding another sentence or two to, and that it must be recognized that Arsenio either went out because of his overrepresenting of black culture in a show that could have taken off to the top, or that he became aware that he was on the way out and decided to make a statement.
To the surprise of everyone in the USA, Black culture (i mean american black not african) is not that interesting. It is interesting enough to represent say 4% of a tv show, like NY culture, or italian american culture, or foreign stuff, or sex, or latino's ... nobody wants to see relentless invitations to Maya Angelou unless they are also prepared to deal with relentless, equallly boring, visits by white authors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.202.13.239 (talk • contribs) 06:37, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well, since he really hasn't done anything since around 1994, what would you expect? I was half expecting to read that he died of aids, heart disease, or something back in the 90s since he so completely vanished from popular culture almost overnight 15 years ago. That his career lasted only seven or eight years might also be indicative of his intrinsic "blandness." Indeed, other than being black, did he ever really have any other noteworthy characteristics? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.1.168.113 (talk) 21:29, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
- Come on you ..."silly goose". Are you really that ignorant or you pretend you don't know? I think it's the latter! Arsenio Hall invited Louis Farrakhan to his show in 1994 despite strong opposition and "advice" from you know "who" because allegedly the NOI was considered "a racist and an anti-semite" (in my opinion he isn't but he's definitely a little "out there" with his comments). The Arsenio Hall show was canceled shortly after and the rest -as we say- is ...history. Xwpis ONOMA (talk) 16:01, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Hall specifically mentions the "drug charges" that "derailed [his] career" during his latest session with Andrew Dice Clay. This is almost certainly tied to the bankruptcy claim(s), and (due to self-admission) should see at least cursory mention in the article. Will try to find further material on same. LA Symphony did a song entitled "Bring Back Arsenio" - that's how i heard of this guy —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 165.173.126.109 (talk) 20:19, 21 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit]played saxophone on the show, it was a bit strange for the time for a presidential candidate t do that — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.202.86.72 (talk • contribs) 16:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
gay protesters
[edit]during a segment when paul hogan was a guest, people in the crowd sarted protesting that arsenio didnt have any gay guests.
after that, he had on harvey firestein — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.202.86.72 (talk • contribs) 16:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
mohammed ali and howard bingham
[edit]the great photographer howard bingham had a new book out, about mohammed ali, his close friend for many many years. ali agreed to go on the show and help promote the book, but only if howard came. the producers started to say 'only ali' after the show was booked. arsenio didnt want howard on, so when ali and howard came out from the curtain, arsenio had guys surround howard and stop him from coming on the stage. journalist frank deford wrote about this , it is on the website of the international cinematographers guild. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.202.86.72 (talk • contribs) 16:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Age
[edit]DOB changed to 1956 per Arsenio Hall's interview with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show on 5/2/2009. Dan (talk) 04:11, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Can we please stop with the back-and-forth on this? The interview mentioned above is cited as a reference in the article: http://www.nbc.com/The_Tonight_Show_with_Jay_Leno/video/clips/arsenios-beef-with-wikipedia-5109/1094981/ . He states he is 53, which means that since his birthday is in February, he was born in 1956 (simple math backs that up). Not sure why this is getting changed every day. Sure, he could be lying about his age, but I think most people would take off more than one year if they were going to do that. --Susan118 (talk) 16:25, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
Article needs explanation of current status
[edit]I didn't get any vague idea from the article about I logged in to find out. I know he hasn't had much media visibility lately. Article says his show was "immensely popular", but it doesn't say why this immensely popular show was canceled. It also needs to say what he's doing now. Did he find another career? There are several recent years that almost no information. 76.21.119.50 (talk) 10:26, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
The current works section looks like it was redacted by Arsenio or his entourage, much like the Corey Feldman article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.53.110.140 (talk) 16:07, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
I would also suggest moving the Tim Conway (2008) section to the previous area since it's no longer current and the The Tim Conway Jr._Show's been canceled. Ryandsmith (talk) 02:29, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
Current Work
[edit]In the Current Work section there is a link to the "Jump the Shark" article. This seems like a dig at Mr. Hall and a matter of opinion, and I propose that it be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.73.166.82 (talk) 17:56, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Involvment in quelling the Rodney King riots
[edit]I may be misremembering this, but I think Hall tried to become a visible presence in LA during the Rodney King riots, encouraging rioters to return to their homes, stop looting, etc.. I really don't have a source here though. 67.149.196.50 (talk) 21:19, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Chunky A
[edit]It isn't clear from the article, but why does rapper Chunky A redirect here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.81.80.179 (talk) 20:21, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
- Chunky A was an alias he used to put out a few songs such as "Ho is lazy". I don't know why this information isn't on his wiki page.Coradon (talk) 13:34, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
Bankruptcy in 2008?
[edit]The source for the bankruptcy in 2008 claim is dubious. I can't find any other sources that report that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.250.49.98 (talk) 05:51, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
Anon IP age vandalism
[edit]An anon IP made this edit in April that violated WP:BLP by making a personal, POV choice despite different reliable sources giving different birth dates. It's hardly unusual for celebrities to fudge their ages — see Lil' Kim, Mariah Carey or Mick Mars, for example. When reliable sources disagree, and in the absence of definitive documentation such as a birth or death certificate, it is POV to choose one over the other based on personal preference. --Tenebrae (talk) 20:04, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
