Area boys in India

[edit]
  • In India, especially in state of Tamil Nadu area boys are groups of young adults usually numbering anything between 4-10. They usually belong to an area like a street or neighbourhood and usually can be found hanging at tea kadais (shops that serve tea mainly). Most area boys ride on customised two wheelers, most of which are customised Yamaha Rx100, although sometime Rx135 is used. This could be compared to the Mods who usually ride on vespas. Though they usually dont pose any threat to the society, they could sometime end up with altercations with neighbourhood gangs. Most area boys go to college or have atleast finished high school, though in low income neighbourhood this is not the usual case. It should also be noted that most of the area boys do not have any criminal records and the whole area boys phenomenon in India can only be refered to as a sub culture like punk or Slackers.

Very interesting gang subculture, but this seems to be a youth movement or phenomenon, very different from the anti-authority, often violent activities of 'Area boys' in Nigeria, which centre around extortion and occasional robbery. Centrepull (talk) 17:38, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
