Table formatting
[edit]I tweaked the table formatting a bit just to give it a little different feel. It might be a good idea to make the "Number" column sortable to make it a bit easier to navigate once the table has been expanded to include all 45 years the award was given out. It also might be worth considered breaking up the table into sub tables by awards if it starts to get too difficult to fomrat properly. Doing such a thing might actually help reduce the size of the table since all of the entries should be able to fit on a single line. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:48, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- Another argument for multiple tables is that it currently only lists 8 of the total number of award categories (there were 17 categories for 2017-2018). Adding all fo the categories to a single table seems like a major formatting issue unless a really small character size is used. Choosing only certain categories seems like a bit of WP:OR and possibly even a bit biased: the current table does not include "Best New Player" or "Female Player of the Year" which seem like major awards. Splitting the tables up would make it easier to include all of the categories and would not require a lot of special formatting or citation. A new table could be done per category or even "type of award" (for example, awards based upon purely numerical date like "Most Games Won" or "Most Consecutinve Games Won", etc. could be in one table, while more subjective awards like "Player of the Year", etc. could be in another. If two tables are still insufficient, then another could be created. A very basic three table layout might look like as follows.
No. Year Player of the Year Female Player of the Year Excellent Player Excelent Female Player Special Award Best New Player Tokyo Press Club Award 45 2018 Yoshiharu Habu Kana Satomi Tatsuya Sugai Sae Itō Sōta Fujii Sōta Fujii Keiji Mori
No. Year Fighting Spirit Most Games Played Female Player Most Games Played Most Games Won Best Winning Percentage Most Consecutive Games Won 45 2018 Masayuki Toyoshima Sōta Fujii (73) Sae Itō (41) Sōta Fujii (61) Sōta Fujii (0.836) Sōta Fujii (29)
No. Year Game of the Year Special Game of the Year Masuda Award Masuda Special Award 45 2018 Akira Watanabe vs. Yoshiharu Habu
(30th Ryūō Title Match Game 4)- Sōta Fujii vs. Akihito Hirose (11th Asahi Cuo Championship)
- Mitsunori Makino vs. Toshiyuki Nakao (31st Ryūō Preliminary Group 6)
- Teruichi Aono
- Yūki Sasaki
Nobuyuki Ōuchi
- Regardless of the formatting, it probably would be smart to take the current content and figure out how to best format it before trying to expand the table any further to include information about the 1st to 37th Annual Awards. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:16, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Ish ishwar and Severian79: Do either of you have any opinions on the above suggestion? I think the formatting/layout should be sorted out before the table is expanded further. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:14, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
- i'm not sure what's best. And, i'll make it worse by asking a question: do we need tables at all? Is it bad to just present each award in a separate section? I dont know.
- My only opinion right now is that i'd prefer to see the Masuda awards be in a separate section. That's simply because personally i'm more interested in the strategy or the interesting move than the person who thought of it or popularized it and it's a way of sectioning out the shogi theory for theoryheads.
- If there are separate tables modeled on the above, i'd put fighting spirit with the player of the year etc. since it's in the same subjectively chosen vein as the others.
- On that note, it would be good to note what some of the awards are for – that is, the criteria for the award if known – for the especially the subjective ones even if the criteria are vague. For instance, i can't tell what Tokyo Press Club Award is just by the name. Well, this is off the topic of formatting....
- I agree with adding all the award categories. (i cant call selectively choosing a subset of them research – original or otherwise. It would just be editor bias and there's no doubt about it being that.)
- I'm not so helpful. (Maybe i'd even change my mind later.) – ishwar (speak) 08:08, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
- I think a fomrat other than tables can be used. Just simple bullet list would work fine. So, would seperate sections for each award. An introductory paragraph could then be added to explain each award. Of course, it would be best if the paragraph ontent could be supported by a source or two, and the names of the winners could then aded below the paragraph. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:25, 8 April 2018 (UTC)

Calender years and shogi years
[edit]This is kind of confusing because the JSA even uses different dates on its webpages, but these awards are given out for "shogi years", not "calendar years". The professional shogi year runs from April 1 until March 31, so it's similar to the Japanese fiscal year and school year. This means that the 2018 awards listed [here are actually the awards for the professional shogi year beginning on April 1, 2017 and ending on March 31, 2018. In Japanese this is referred to as error: {{nihongo}}: Japanese or romaji text required (help) which is different from the error: {{nihongo}}: Japanese or romaji text required (help) (the calendar year). Things get confusing because the award ceremonies seem to always be held and the beginning of the following shogi year; for example, the ceremony for the 2017 awards was held in April 2018[1]. The dates are confusing because the JSA lists the calendar year of the ceremony on its webpage about the awards, but uses the shogi year on the individual player profile pages.
The closest comparison I can make are the awards given out by the NBA or NHL; for example, the NBA Most Valuable Player Award and NHL Most Valuable Player Award are given out by season, not calender year. So, one way to work around this for this article might be to list the awards by "Shogi year" or list them by "season". Using 2017 as an example, list the error: {{nihongo}}: Japanese or romaji text required (help) awards simply as "2017" or as "2017–18". I was bold in doing the former, but the latter would work too and not require much time to do. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:00, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
