We need to redo the this page. Beniamino Gigli was the role's most important interpreter, along with many others who are not listed in this "bush league" description.

Also needed is Soprano's who have sung Maddelena including Maria Callas and plot. Also Act III and IV takes place during The reign of terror.

Usually, the discography is included in the article about the opera itself. Therefore I do not understand the existence of Andrea Chénier discography.

May I also comment on the use of the pejorative adjective "histrionic" by the author. I think it is obvious from the author's use of that term that he/she/it is a rather less than ideal person to be making this entry in Wikipedia. The previous commentator's use of the term "bush league" to describe this article is, in my humble opinion, most apt. And why, if you don't like the opera or don't know that much about it or its history, would you EVER write up an article about it in the first place? I wonder if the author just transcribed from Kobbe's book of opera? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.106.160.25 (talk) 00:43, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Incroyables and Merveilleuses

[edit]

How should we be glossing this in the summary? I'm really averse to glossing merveilleuse as prostitute and incroyable as spy, because that's factually untrue (see Incroyables and Merveilleuses), but on the other hand, those styles are anachronistic in this opera anyway. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 21:11, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that a merveilleuse is not a prostitute. I took out the parenthetic and linked to the "Incroyables and Merveilleuses" article. Curious readers should be able to follow up on the topic there. It's true that both are anachronistic in the opera, but I don't think that needs to be mentioned in the plot synopsis. If one were to discuss every anachronism, it could fill a whole new section.
