Edits from October 2009 to June 2010

[edit]

Hello fellow Madagascar historians, Please don't be offended by my reverting all edits made between 10/09 to 06/10. There were so many problems with the changes made to the content and formatting (which many of you were trying to re-correct) in that period that it was easiest to just change the article back to how it was last year. Let's make our formatting and other edits from this base. My issue with the changes made from the version I posted in October 09 is that they removed significant amounts of information without reason. This information is factual and I included the references at the bottom of the page. Why remove it? In addition, the user who removed the information left fragmented sentences, created grammatical errors in the text, and attempted to knit together distinct topics in a way that disrupted the logical flow of the article. Please, let's *add* to knowledge about Ambohimanga, not detract from it by removing facts from the article. Any debate about the veracity of sources or other such questions should be discussed here so this article can develop in a productive way. Lemurbaby (talk) 16:15, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Prepping for GA

[edit]

References are all in. Next up I'll expand the lead and complete a thorough copy edit for flow, clarity, internal consistency and conciseness. Revisions will hopefully be complete within the next week or two. Lemurbaby (talk) 10:39, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Will review this later on today, wouldn't want to leave you in limbo eh?Tibetan Prayer 12:23, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • No coordinates for the site in the header?
  • I'm using the World Heritage Site infobox, and have the information but don't know the coding to add it in. I tried this and it didn't work: |latd=18 |latm=45 |latNS=S |longd=47 |longm=33 |longEW=E Do you know how to add this? Lemurbaby (talk) 06:28, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Added the general coordinates but for some reason that is north of Antananarivo not east as the article says?♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 21:44, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding it. I've changed the lead from "east" to "northeast" to match the rest of the article. Lemurbaby (talk) 04:26, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think the convention on here is to add a hyphen between 15th and century etc.
  • It looks like it's probably all right as is, per the Manual of Style here
  • Perhaps an exterior wide view of the site would be more suited to the infobox?
  • Agreed. Since it's a series of walled compounds with plenty of large trees throughout, and the main entrance is up a stairway so steep that an exterior shot would only show stairs and nothing else (no buildings or walls), I'll use the photo of the hill itself. • "Andrianampoinimerina is said to have thrown pearls and silver rings into the lake to inaugurate it." Who said this? According to legend?
  • "The forest at Ambohimanga is the largest of the last remaining fragments of primary forest that formerly covered the highlands." Quite a strong claim, I'd source this.
  • This and most of the other points below that you identify as needing a citation are all drawn from the first reference that follows them. In order to avoid overlinking, I only use the reference the end of the information drawn from that source. All the content in my articles is sourced, using this system. If information is included that I haven't provided a source for yet and some other piece of sourced information follows it in the paragraph, I typically use the citation needed tag after the portion that's unsourced. But I don't nominate articles for GA with a CN tag (except potentially by oversight).Lemurbaby (talk) 06:28, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "According to oral history, the original inhabitants of Madagascar were the Vazimba, most likely descendants of the earliest waves of Austronesian migrations dating back to 350 BCE." Citation needed too I think.
  • "In Madagascar today, Antananarivo is viewed as the nation's political capital," More than viewed, it is the official capital, can you reword this? I'd write it as "Although Antananarivo is the nation's political capital today, Ambohimanga is regarded as the spiritual capital."
  • Imerina, Antananarivo, Fandroana appear to be linked more than once in the body, once is OK. Also inconsistency in italicizing Fandroana.
  • "The architectural styles represented at the site reflect the dramatic changes experienced in Imerina over the reign of the 19th century Kingdom of Madagascar, which saw the arrival and rapid expansion of European influence at the royal court. " Citation needed, seems a little OR.
  • You might want to check the dates of your images, "30 November 1899" for the royal pavilion images at present! Great Scott, did you use the DeLorean?
  • I uploaded about 50 photos at once (a very long process with the slow internet connection in Rwanda) and for some reason that was the default date. I'm surprised - it seems like it used to be the date either automatically defaulted to the day of the upload or pulled the date from the camera's memory. The dates don't have an effect on the copyright, so this isn't critical. It's something I do expect to come back to when I'm feeling burned out on doing the more urgent work of writing article content.
  • "Ambohimanga has been viewed by many Merina since the late 19th century as the embodiment of an ideal social order blessed by the ancestors. " Citation needed.
