ambassador to the netherlands
[edit]Mister Sobel isn't Ambassador anymore, and he is to be followed up by someone else, who has several lawsuits running against him. I recommend an update of this article. Arnall seems to arrive really soon - I've put him in.
Seperate lists?
[edit]I think this page could benefit from a slight change: instead of listing ambassadors, Chargés d'affaires, and nations without an embassy seperately, how about putting them all in one list that simply says what the status is? Much less confusing I think to keep it all together. Unless anyone objects, I'll make that change in a few days. Swegner 06:57, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
- An illustration of how I think the list ought to look:
Host country Location Type Head of Mission Afghanistan Kabul Embassy Ronald E. Neumann, Ambassador Albania Tirana Embassy Marcie Berman Ries, Ambassador Algeria Algiers Embassy Richard W. Erdman, Ambassador Angola Luanda Embassy Cynthia Grissom Efird, Ambassador Argentina Buenos Aires Embassy Lino Gutierrez, Ambassador Armenia Yerevan Embassy John Evans, Ambassador Australia Canberra Embassy William A. Stanton, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim Australia Melbourne Consulate Earl Michael Irving, Consul General Australia Perth Consulate Robin McClellan, Consul General Australia Sydney Consulate Stephen T. Smith, Consul General
- Any opinions or suggestions? Swegner 23:13, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
- Good idea, but what about a way to make it so there aren't 4 separate Australia entries (or any other number depending on the particular country)? --Easter Monkey 08:53, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
- I can simply leave out consulates and only include embassies -I don't feel strongly either way. My thinking was that by including consulates we avoid the difficult question of whether or not to include places like Hong Kong which are clearly important missions but are still counted as consulates. Swegner 18:34, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
Format of this page leads it to become out-of-date quickly
[edit]Wouldn't it be an idea to put in then ambassadors arrive and when their term would expire? Or even keep historical data.
With the valid-to date, the chance of believing in stale data goes down: it would show as being out of date.
Does Mediawiki have an option to hide data, so we can show the current ambassadors and fold out the history in the same page, or would be need to keep the history in separate documents? The latter would make it more work to maintain and would lead to many very lightweight pages ("historical ambassadors to France" - yawn).
Walter Page?
[edit]Is the Walter Page that's linked to (a musician) really the same person as the ambassador? There's no indication of such on the musician's page. Dvd Avins 05:08, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Philippines?
[edit]How come in the current ambassadors section it does't mention the Philippines.? JJ 21:57, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Holy See, not Vatican
[edit]I have just corrected the article to read 'Holy See' instead of Vatican City. This is because the Vatican does not send ambassadors around the world because it does not want to. The Holy See does though. The CIA Factbook explains it this way:
The term "Holy See" refers to the authority, jurisdiction, and sovereignty vested in the Pope and his advisors to direct the worldwide Catholic Church. The Holy See has a legal personality that allows it to enter into treaties as the juridical equal of a state and to send and receive diplomatic representatives. Vatican City, created in 1929 to administer properties belonging to the Holy See in Rome, is recognized under international law as a sovereign state, but it does not send or receive diplomatic representatives.

List of
[edit]Shouldn't the name of the article be changed from "Ambassadors to the United States" to "List of ambassors to the United States"? Because, it doesn't really have any information relating to the job at all, it just seems to be a list of names. So the name's not very appropriate. Daniel Montin 15:56, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Foreign service vs. political appointees
[edit]Any interest in creating a new column noting whether the current ambassador is a political appointee versus a career foreign service officer? The transition may present the best time to do this as information has been in the press lately that Obama has "released" all of the political appointees effective January 20. --Daysleeper47 (talk) 18:24, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
Recent edit: unrecognized countries and Shirley Temple Black
[edit]Hello all,
Here are the details of my recent edit.
Since N. Cyprus (TRNC) and W. Sahara are in the table, I've added Taiwan (ROC), Abkhazia, and S. Ossetia to the table. All three are in the same boat as the TRNC and W. Sahara (i.e. unrecognized). I also added a note about Kosovo's status in order to keep NPOV. The famious ambassdors box listed Shirley Temple Black as serving at the UN. This is not correct. See the State Dept.'s list of US-UN Ambassdors here: [1]. She did serve in Ghana and Czechoslovakia, though; see [2] and [3]. So in this case, the other two countries are correct. Hope this helps. - Thanks, Hoshie 06:17, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Nomination process
[edit]How about including a paragraph on the numerous stages involved in the process before someone becomes U.S. ambassador?
- President announces intent to nominate
- President sends nomination to Senate
- candidate testifies in Senate committee hearing
- candidate is voted out of committee
- Senate confirms
- Ambassador-Designate sworn in, becomes Ambassador
- presents credentials to foreign head of state
That's to the best of my knowledge - anyone have an official source for these steps? --Webmgr (talk) 11:31, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Grey rows in table
[edit]Why do some of the gray bars extend across all the columns of the table, while other gray bars only cover certain columns? AnonMoos (talk) 00:01, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
how buot ambassador to the UN
[edit]AND-- there's a 'U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies in Rome'. cool huh? any reason not to include? http://blogs.state.gov/index.php/entires/kilimo_kwanza/ n-dimensional §кakkl€ 06:00, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, the state department has trashed the history site
[edit]The State Department history site seems to have been scrambled and there do not seem to be any lists of ambassadors accessible any more. Any ideas? Mangoe (talk) 15:38, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
List of current ambassadors updated
[edit]As said in the section title but I would be happy if someone would check up the confirmation dates. Cassandro (talk) 20:33, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Possible Copyvio?
[edit]The section of the article called "Nations Without Exchange of Ambassadors" is a nearly verbatim copy of this website. Also, it mostly repeats information that can already be found in the notes to the list above. I think that it should be deleted, or at least heavily reworded, and if there is no response here in a week or so, I will be bold and do so.--Danaman5 (talk) 12:59, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Another column for their careers
[edit]I'd like a sortable column at the right of the table with their career before becoming ambassadors. It would show a lot of information on appointment techniques. --Stidmatt (talk) 01:56, 4 April 2011 (UTC)User:Stidmatt
Not sure of gov. structure?
[edit]I added the new Ambassador to the Republic of Macedonia, Paul D. Wohlers, but I wasn't sure if the Chargé d’Affaires should be removed or not? Raine (talk) 20:27, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, you should remove the chargé in such a case. We list only the chief of mission here. I updated it for you. •••Life of Riley (T–C) 00:38, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Ref column?
[edit]What is the purpose of the ref column? All entries marked with Ref point to the list of ambassadors for a given country. If this is supposed to be a reference, please note that per WP:RS/WP:V, Wikipedia does not allow other Wikipedia articles to be used as references. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 22:53, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- It simply provides a link for the user to view the specific ambassador page. •••Life of Riley (T–C) 01:44, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- Ah. Then it should be renamed. Perhaps ref -> list, with the column name being more descriptive. Currently the name is hardly helpful. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 18:32, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think "list" is particularly helpful either. What does it mean? The ambassador pages are not lists. •••Life of Riley (T–C) 00:05, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Ambassador to Slovakia

Killed in office
[edit]John Peurifoy, U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, died in a traffic collision while in office. Doesn't he qualify for the killed-in-office section? 46.103.255.244 (talk) 13:50, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
Big update needed due to Trump administration
[edit]I think this page is now rather out of date: According to the Washington Post most US Ambassadorships are now vacant except for China, Israel and the United Kingdom. I don't know whether it's worth updating the main chart to show most of the ambassadorships are vacant or to wait until the new administration nominates candidates to fill the roles. gbrading (ταlκ) 12:05, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- You are right, and we're definitely working on it. It's not that this list hasn't been touched since January 20, but we do definitely need more help cleaning the list up. There are just so many politically-appointed Assistant Secretaries and Ambassadors that it's hard to keep up. I know I and a few other editors are doing our best to change articles as we go, and you are more than welcome to jump in and help out as well. Gabe Iglesia (talk) 21:37, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- Also in regards to your question, I believe the consensus is that we do both - we list "Vacant" but also indicate the Chargé d'affaires. Gabe Iglesia (talk) 21:39, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- Good idea; I was nervous of updating it because as you say finding out who is actually doing what at the moment is a struggle! I will try to update some stuff when I get a chance. gbrading (ταlκ) 09:42, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Replace website column with embassy article
[edit]Hello, I noticed that on the list there is website, I was wondering if we could replace that with articles of embassies to allow users to learn about specific country embassy and previous ambassadors. Wanted to consult with everyone for your input before moving forward. DownTownRich (talk) 13:46, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
