E-Waste End of Life
[edit]The article needs tracking and information on the short lifespan of cloud connected gadgets. The Echo will be end of life and stop working in 2020, just over three years after it is introduced. Numerous other cloud connected products become unusable after just a year or two because they do not make enough money for the manufacturer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:D591:5F10:ACD4:4867:B18E:BDA4 (talk) 20:17, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
Amazon Alexa
[edit]I believe that Amazon Alexa should have it's own Wikipedia article because many devices will be using it in the near future, not just the Amazon Echo. For example, the Toymail Mailman will be able to read kids stories using the Alexa Voice Service API.

- I agree, there is now Echo, Tap and Dot.
- sherpajohn (talk) 07:15, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
- I agree as well, Amazon Alexa is also now a developer tool for developers to add their own skills and integrate the Alexa service with their own devices and apps: https://developer.amazon.com/alexa

- I have gone ahead and created a draft for the article, Draft:Amazon Alexa. It would be awesome to have some help writing the article. Daylen (talk) 23:38, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
Software versions
[edit]The software versions heading does not include new releases. Can someone please add them.

Availability
[edit]Not sure "widespread" availability can apply to a product which is only available in certain geographies. No Alexa enabled devices from Amazon are available in the UK, it may be they are only available in the USA. sherpajohn (talk) 07:15, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Sherpajohn! The Amazon Echo is only officially available in the United States; however, Canadian companies such as ecobee make skills for the device. The device will operate outside of the United States; however, the companion app is only available on US app stores. Hope this helps! Daylen (talk) 03:40, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Related Gadgets
[edit]These should probably each get their own article but I'm too lazy to do it. Powerlad (talk) 02:29, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- I totally agree, Powerlad! Once I clean up + expand this article, and make an Amazon Alexa article, I am planning on making an article for the Amazon Tap. I will make sure to post the draft link here so others can contribute. Daylen (talk) 03:40, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
List of Software Versions
[edit]I was surprised to see a detailed list of software versions in a hardware product article. Such detailed information of interest only to a few users and to competitors is not IMO relevant to an encyclopedia article. It belongs in other websites, not in WP, IMO. I suggest it be deleted, and I will come back here to do so soon. Any votes for or against removal? David Spector (talk) 23:30, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
- Against. Even though some features can be enhanced by Amazon by making the changes in the backend without making changes to the firmware on the device, having a history of changes is helpful to see if the feature is actually available on device. For example, I was trying to research if Amazon Tap can now be used as a speaker phone. While this feature is not available out of the box, there are no hardware limitations to it being one (it has speaker and a microphone, and it interfaces with a cell phone, so it's a software problem). Not having a list of firmware changes for the Tap, I don't know if this is possible. -- Urokugaeshi (talk) 10:40, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
Hardware Specs
[edit]What is the processor and memory/storage in the Echo Dot and Echo Tap? --KJRehberg (talk) 05:01, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
- Good question! I couldn't seem to find it on the product description pages. If you think the article should include a comparison, I have the email for Alexa's PR person. Cheers, Daylen (talk) 03:58, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Why would it have memory or a processor? My understanding is that it is cloud based and is just a link to this cloud service.BrianAlex (talk) 21:38, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Amazon Echo as a trojan horse
[edit]See this Backchannel's article and the Trojan horse (computing) concept. --Krauss (talk) 10:58, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
needs major overhaul
[edit]The way google home/nest is laid out, is more digestible.
At least needs a separate sub-page (like Google Nest) for Amazon's speaker & speaker+display range
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Nest_(smart_speakers)
Also, quite a bit of missing info on the latest developments I would myself, alas, crazy busy right now...

[edit]Having prepared specification table of Amazon Echo devices, I'm gonna to create new page for it. So current content of Variants section would be moved to new page together with speification table.
ToC would ba added to both pages. Any ideas welcome.
