[edit]Now that Arrested Development is defunct, shouldn't all that be in the past tense?
Yes it should be. I will change it. djej1 19:21, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
content question
[edit]Nothing in here about her use of racial epithets? <ref> https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/alia-shawkat-nword-controversy-brad-pitt-225214340.html<ref> 104.244.129.39 (talk) 12:57, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
Name pronunciation
[edit]For some reason the IPA pronunciation of Alia's name keeps reappearing. I keep pointing out that it's incorrect (that is, not following English phonetics). It's also unsourced. Since the burden of editing is for inclusion of edits rather than omission, I'm removing the pronunciation guide and until someone can provide a source for the pronunciation I will consider any inclusion of it as vandalism. Thank you. AEuSoes1 19:51, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- If you think it is incorrect, then correct it, don't delete it. If you don't know how to correct it, then ask other editors for assistance, such as on the talk page. If you would like to ask for a source, add {{cn}} or {{fact}} following the item, or if you feel the fact itself is disputable, add {{verify source}}. You can also copy and paste the item to the talk page and ask for a source, noting this in the edit summary, if you have serious doubts about it. Good faith edits are not vandalism. -Shannernanner 09:08, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I would correct it if I could, but I'm really not sure what Sburke had intended when he put that pronunciation. Sburke has repeatedly put bad pronunciations (although I think in good faith) throughout wikipedia and the only reason I found this page was because I was looking at his recent edits. With Wikipedia, the burden of proof is with those wishing to include not those wishing to exclude. Find a source. Heck even an audio clip of her name (like during an interview or something) would be fine. AEuSoes1 19:51, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I understood the intended pronunciation. According to the Template:Fact page, unsourced information should only be immediately removed if it is "very doubtful and very harmful [bold in original]." For the record, I am aware that her first name is pronounced AL-ee-uh,[1] though I have not heard her last name pronounced. -Shannernanner 06:50, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- All right, thanks to Youtube, I've found it: straight from the horse's mouth. Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɻɛ̃ⁿdˡi] 03:31, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
- For the record (in case it gets changed again), that was ˈæliə ˈʃoʊkɑːt. kwami (talk) 02:10, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- I just watched the video and she doesn't say it very clearly, the other link that was used as a citation for this pronunciation leads to a 404. Ive just watched a bunch of interviews where a lot of different people introduce her as /ˈʃɑ.kæt/ and I've found two videos where she very clearly introduces herself that way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti_WGeDSfg8 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llKyFC0jbGs . So I will be amending the page to include this pronunciation. The only question is, because of her cot-caught merger accent, whether maybe a better transcription would be /ˈʃɔ.kæt/, but that's hard to say so for now I'll just list it how she says it, but I'd be interested to hear others' opinions on the /ɑ/ versus /ɔ/ question. 2WR1 (talk) 07:56, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
- Upon further thinking about this, I decided to go with the transcription /ˈʃɔː.kæt/, based on the fact that I did see interviews with people without the cot-caught merger pronouncing it this way which leads me to believe (also considering the spelling) that this is a more accurate transcription and the only reason she pronounces it with the /ɑ/ vowel instead is because her dialect has the cot-caught merger. Again though, I am very open to hearing other people's thoughts on this. 2WR1 (talk) 08:08, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
- /ɔː/ is the correct symbol to use here. As long as it's a vowel in caught to those who distinguish it from cot (which the spelling aw indicates), we use /ɔː/, because our English transcription is WP:DIAPHONEMIC. In the 2005 video she clearly says /ˈʃoʊkɑːt/, but in the more recent videos you cite she indeed says /ˈʃɔːkæt/. Sounds like she switched to the latter because everyone kept pronouncing it that way based on the spelling. Nardog (talk) 03:07, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
- For the record (in case it gets changed again), that was ˈæliə ˈʃoʊkɑːt. kwami (talk) 02:10, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah. She's Iraqi on her father's side and Irish and Italian on her mother's side. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.24.205.12 (talk) 00:35, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Use of racial slurs
[edit]Shawkat used racial slurs in an 2016 interview with South by Southwest. This is well-documented by several reliable sources, and I will copy my comments from 142.161.72.226's talk page for accessibility.
For further information on why I reverted back to the previous state: If an allegation or incident is noteworthy, relevant, and well documented, it belongs in the article—even if it is negative and the subject dislikes all mention of it.
from WP:BLPPUBLIC. Here are some articles from a cursory Google search: Here's the actual SXSW video[2][3][4][5].
Since then, 142.161.72.226 has not responded at all either on the article talk page or their own, therefore, I reverted the article multiple times back to the original state. I have also communicated somewhat through edit summaries, as that is the only way the IP has communicated at all. xRENEGADEx (talk | contribs) 02:04, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
