Criticism paragraph

Due to the unsuccessful nature of the Yankees 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 postseasons, along with Rodriguez's sub .200 batting average in the postseasons of 2005 and 2006,[44] Rodriguez has drawn much criticism in the New York area. He is often compared unfavorably to other Yankees greats who have performed exceptionally well in the postseason, such as Reggie Jackson.

It should read:

Due to the unsuccessful nature of the Yankees 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 postseasons, along with Rodriguez's sub .200 batting average in the postseasons of 2005 and 2006,[44] Rodriguez has drawn much criticism in the New York area. Only foreignors should refer to other countries

Inconsistent treatment of natural born whites versus hispanic natural born players.

Either refer to heritage of parents of all white players or just mention that A-Rod is an American.

Why special treatment for American born hispanics?

LaidOff (talk) 02:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I can accept that rationale. --Muboshgu (talk) 02:53, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Referring to Rodriguez as a Dominican American seems accurate to me because he has dual citizenship. He also lived in both countries during his childhood. Furthermore, although he missed the tournament due to injury, he had announced his intention to play for the Dominican Republic in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, after having played for the U.S. in 2006.[1] I think this shows that, to Rodriguez, Dominican and American are integral parts of his nationality. --James Fahringer (talk) 00:32, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Can any Alex Rodriguez experts confirm or refute the claim on the Coming to America page that a young ARod had a cameo in the Eddie Murphy movie? THF (talk) 20:43, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Two items

  1. The intro discusses extensively "prior to 31st birthday", but Rodriguez is now 33. The sentences containing "currently first" and "to this point in his career ... prior to their 31st birthdays" are both in need of reflection of this fact. At present they seem to indicate that he is still under 31.
  2. The "1997–99 season" section lists Alex as the 5th youngest player to hit for the cycle, while the intro lists him as the youngest. -71.235.99.213 (talk) 16:23, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Good points, I reverted both. They were weakly sourced as it is and the cycle stuff is trivial and doesn't belong in the lede. Thanks for pointing it out. --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 04:06, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

"A-Fraud" and "A-Roid"

I strongly suggest we remove these nicknames from the article, or at least move them in the steroid use section. They are clear violations of WP:BLP and simply do not deserve to be mentioned in the lead. They are not a common nicknames. Do U(knome)? yes...or no 06:38, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

I see someone has already provided for this. Thanks, Do U(knome)? yes...or no 06:39, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Both are in common use among opposing fans, especially "A-Fraud" which was already being used before the steroid revelations (and according to former Yankees manager Joe Torre, even A-Rod's own teammates used the nickname). If they're citable (and "A-Fraud" at least is easy to cite, clearly reliable sources like NBC have noted it)...WP:BLP is important, but it doesn't mean all criticism of the person must be excised from their article. 75.76.213.106 (talk) 03:13, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Everybody calls him A-Roid or A-Fraud, cause that's what he is. Even MSNBC called him A-Roid [2]. This should be in the article. Wetman88 (talk) 16:03, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't belong in the lead. It could be included in the steroids section in a single sentence with appropriate citations. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 16:06, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
A-Fraud is not entirely related to steroids. It's become a common enough nickname (in the clubhouse even) so i don't see why it wouldn't be in the leadharlock_jds (talk) 17:44, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Penalty for Steroid Use

I don't have the actual citations, but I was reading this article and found that at the end of the steroids section, there is a line that states that he will not face penalty or legal sanction. This is simply not true; just yesterday, Commissioner Selig stated that he is currently deciding on whether or not to punish Rodriguez for his admitted use, citing different reasons. I don't have the source of the material, but it was all over ESPN and can probably be found on their website. --CanesOL79 (talk) 15:09, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

I agree that paragraph should be changed. Here's a cite for Selig considering his options.[3]--Cube lurker (talk) 15:15, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Steroid section

Now that he's admitted to using steroids, it's no longer an issue of "criticisms" as it's been verified; therefore, I broke it out into a separate section. UncleFester (talk) 16:56, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

The section is getting way too big. It's the largest section in the article. Some of the details should be removed for the longterm.--brewcrewer (yada, yada) 00:48, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
I suggest subheadings first—for example, 'early denials,' a section on Primobolan, etc. Then trim it down. Doppo145 (talk) 16:20, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
as the story becomes more stable unnessary facts can easily be trimed out but right now it's hard to know what's 'relivient' and what isn't. harlock_jds (talk) 19:15, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
You may want to add the new info about Alex travelling with the banned trainer the entire 2007 season and Selig looking into that as well.

Kristin Davis allegations

Anyone want to take a stab at this? Enigmamsg 04:30, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Biracial?

Rodriguez refers to himself as "biracial" in a Sports Illustrated interview that's used as a reference (and quoted) in this article. Does anybody know specifics about this, i.e., what races each parent are/were? Or if he was just making the biracial remark as hyperbole to illustrate his point about how often he's criticized? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.200.177.10 (talk) 20:01, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Pitch Tips

Should the recent allegations of Alex Rodriguez using pitch tips be added to the article? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/04/30/roberts.qa/index.html?bcnn=yes&bcnn=yes —Preceding unsigned comment added by Synesthetic (talkcontribs) 06:35, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Could Care Less

The phrase "Could Care Less" may be a bastardization of the British "Couldn't Care Less," but it is still a legitimate and very common American slang phrase. It does not warrant a [sic]. "Could Care Less" is considered to have sarcastic connotations, and has not been demonstrated to be formed strictly from a misunderstanding of the British phrase.--Tengen (talk) 20:19, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Kate Hudson

User: Kyliestar is constantly deleting info that Arod and Kate Hudson are seeing each other, even though it has been reported by numerous sources. Richiekim (talk) 15:31, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

I put it back in. Peter Abraham says she's with A-Rod at the family picnic today.--Muboshgu (talk) 22:02, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Grammar cleanup?

The copy editor in me is getting antsy about the small grammatical fixes that could be made to the 2009 season section of the article, but which can't be made because of the semi-protected status. Any recourse for that? BJuarez (talk) 08:22, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Postseason stats-Home Runs

In fact, no postseason action counts toward season or career stats at all. Daveisland (talk) 03:02, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Image consultants

Preceding mention that Rodriguez will be a spokesperson against steroids it mentions he hires a "cadre of image consultants". I think it's OK to mention the consultants in the article, but putting it right before mentioning he'll speak against steroids to high school children is implicitly accusing him of only doing it for selfish reasons and is therefore biased. 65.199.57.194 (talk) 22:08, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Good catch. I agree it could be relevant for a part of the article where it doesn't produce bias, but as I couldn't find a spot I took it out. Maybe a paragraph somewhere should describe his use of consultants, but it shouldn't necessarily be in the steroids section. --Muboshgu (talk) 22:32, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Events in progress

please do not add stuff that may have to be edited after the event is over; i.e. 2009 WS: Don't write yanx are up 3-1 in series as it will change by tomorrow's game (btw, this is arod's page, NOT the yankees page. The link to "2009 WS" is enough for a/one to research the WS results.)[sorry for putting on top of page; just seems most important contemporary issue]Daveisland (talk) 18:31, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

I agree with you on this, but with the high level of interest, there's not much we can do. After the WS is over, anonymous users will stop coming around adding little bits and pieces of information that fail the WP:RECENT test, and we'll fix up the section for a more appropriate historical perspective. (BTW it is better to put new topics at the bottom, as it can be easier to reach than those below the headers.) --Muboshgu (talk) 18:40, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Done He never played for the Miami Hurricanes. --Muboshgu (talk) 06:27, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

His nationality

We know that because his natural born, for purposes of the presidency, he is an American. But this is a baseball player and for the baseball world, he is Dominican for the World Baseball Classic. This is solely for the baseball world. Thus he has two categories of nationality that are notable. His real nationality of American and his baseball nationhood. He is a baseballer so his baseball nation is notable. Lingust (talk) 21:51, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

And it says in the first sentence that he "is an American professional baseball player of Dominican parentage and his aunt Mercecdes Davis raised him in Dominican republic. and his favorite niece/cousin is ivana davis" That's plenty. --Muboshgu (talk) 21:38, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
It is just that when I watch the World Series, it made he think he was Tony Fernandez in that he wasn't American. It is confusing. Therefore I think it notable that readers should not be confused and that the bvaseball world frequently refers to him as Dominican, which is silly because he learned to play in America! Dominican players dsiplay their Dominican qualities learned frm playing on that island. Alex learned an American style of Baseball. Lingust (talk) 21:51, 12 November 2009 (UTC)b
I don't really follow what you're saying. The first sentence says he's an American of Dominican heritage and that's plenty of information about his ethnicity. --Muboshgu (talk) 22:02, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Criticism Section - Not Clutch

This section is basically about how Arod is not considered to be clutch. The section is outdated and irrelevant due to his performance in the 2009 playoffs. No one debates whether or not he is clutch anymore. This entire section should be deleted. Does anyone disagree? Sportsbettor123 (talkcontribs) 21:18, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm thinking about this. Some of it could be kept, if put in a historical perspective. But it is clearly over the top as it is. --Muboshgu (talk) 03:10, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
I just reread this section, and it's completely outdated. I still think it should be removed in it's entirety. Sportsbettor123 (talk) 15:40, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Some of it needs to be kept. Let's discuss what should stay and what should go. I'm totally okay with reducing the size of it, but it needs to be mentioned. --Muboshgu (talk) 17:21, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
I made some dramatic changes to the section, trying to shorten it and update it. Also, I've tried to reorganize the section as it had obviously grown organically over a long period. My efforts are by no means stellar, and I suggest people look at the section with new eyes to see how to further improve it.LedRush (talk) 18:52, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
It is, at the least, a good start. Thank you. I'll take a closer look at it later. --Muboshgu (talk) 19:07, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Nice updates. The section seems relevant again. Sportsbettor123 (talk) 02:29, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
I made some minor copyedits to the section. I think the section ought to stay included -- it's part of Arod's historical record that he's come under fire for being "un-clutch" (ludicrous as those criticisms may have been). I'm also going to remove the tag suggesting integrating the section elsewhere -- the section hardly gives undue weight to the controversy, which extended over a period of several years and occupied who-knows-how-many back pages in the sports press. ɠǀɳ̩ςεΝɡbomb 16:48, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Range Factor

The range factor claims currently tagged as as "citation needed" can be verified on <a href="http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding/_/year/2004/position/3b/league/al/sort/rangeFactor/order/true">ESPN's page</a> (and probably elsewhere). The claims as stated are accurate and verifiable. I'd add the cite, but on second thought I question whether it's really a useful thing to state. It makes it sound like that's the final word on his defense, which it surely isn't. Range factor isn't the only defensive stat, and A-Rod does not rank last on many of the others. To cite it exclusively feels like you're trying to push a point of view criticizing him defensively. (Also, even on range factor, in 2004 and 2005 he was tied for last, not alone.) Iglew (talk) 23:31, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

"Youngest to hit 600"

This stat is misleading, while he may be the youngest to achieve this he took an above average time to do so. He played 183 more games than Babe Ruth. Because Rodriguez started playing baseball at a much earlier age than many of the greats should be noted. He is a good player, but statements concerning his age should be taken out. Games played/Seasons are a better barometer of talent than age. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.123.4.230 (talk) 14:04, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

A-Rod

This article just jumps right into calling him "A-Rod" without ever informing the uninitiated that this is his nickname. It should be included in the lead somehow. Lampman (talk) 17:59, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

I second this. Jariola (talk) 15:20, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

The first paragraph ends with the following: "Rodriguez is considered one of the best baseball players of all time." This should be changed to " Rodriguez is considered by some to be one of the best baseball players of all time" with the key words being "by some." Calling someone one of the best baseball players of all time is subjective and should not be delineated as object fact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.127.51.247 (talk) 01:00, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Please change the following sentences:

"During his career, Rodriguez has played in 54 post-season games and has batted .302 (just .003 points off his career regular season BA), hit 13 home-runs (1 HR every 15.3 AB), and has driven in 35 runs. If those statistics were projected over a 162-game season, Rodriguez would hit nearly 40 home-runs, and amass 135 RBIs.[70]"

to

"During his career, Rodriguez has played in 68 post-season games and has batted .277 (.015 points off his career regular season BA), hit 13 home-runs (1 HR every 19.2 AB), and has driven in 41 runs. If those statistics were projected over a 162-game season, Rodriguez would hit 25 home-runs, and amass 98 RBIs."

Support for the proposed edit can be found at http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodrial01.shtml

The above sentences, the last of the criticism section, are not current and not supported by its source, which was from before the '09 WS (although the statistics in the sentences were accurate through 2009). Additionally, citation to baseball-reference.com provides support to the previously unsupported first sentence of the paragraph ("Rodriguez answered many of the criticisms of his postseason performance by performing exceptionally well in the 2009 postseason, where he posted a .365 BA and hit 6 home-runs in 52 at-bats during the Yankees' 15 post-season games."). Rl38 (talk) 18:19, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Strikeouts

The article should contain references to Rodriguez's 1,982 career strikeouts (5th all-time, 2nd among active players). Furthermore, I would argue his SOs should be listed in his career statistics info box, as A-Rod, like 2 other active players in the Top 10, is known for his high SO rate. Zepppep (talk) 21:45, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

I'd recommend to start a "Player profile" section and his hitting style can mention his strikeouts. He's not in the Adam Dunn or Ryan Howard class as far as K rate, and its not a defining part of his legacy.—Bagumba (talk) 22:18, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Good thought. I didn't see a player profile yet so thought this would be a quicker way to let viewers know he strikes out 21% of his official ABs (true, that Dunn is at 34%) until someone more interested implements a player profile. Good suggestion, however. His regular season SO rate may not be as well known as his post-season rate as far his "legacy" goes but I did already see some mention of his post-season struggles in the article. Zepppep (talk) 00:51, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Needs a Trim

I think some of the material in here could be trimmed a little as it's quite a bloated article. Some of it verges on gossip - e.g. there's a full paragraph that simply reads "As previously mentioned, Rodriguez and Jeter's friendship had cooled in recent years. However as of 2011, they have grown close again." I'd question whether material of that nature is really necessary. Indeed that particular section of the article (Personal Life) just tails off into a list of newspaper fluff stories. Bandanamerchant (talk) 01:08, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

We can definitely look into certain places we can trim. When I got Jeter's article passed as a Featured Article, I was told I needed to document the Jeter-ARod relationship clearly. You can see the review on the Jeter talk page. Other tabloid-y stories could be cut, depending on what they are and how important they really are. ARod's public image is an important part of the biography. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:20, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, based on the discussion, there's enough sources to justify due weight being given to the relationship.—Bagumba (talk) 16:38, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
To clarify, I'm not saying that any mention of the Jeter-A-Rod relationship should be removed, just some of the gossipy stuff in the Personal Life section. The Jeter-A-Rod relationship is actually already mentioned a couple of times in the article before then - the 2007 section, for instance. Bandanamerchant (talk) 11:35, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Please change the text, "While rehabilitating his hip, Rodriguez was embroiled in a series of negative headlines: he became a central figure of the Biogenesis baseball scandal and MLB's investigation into his possible connection to performance-enhancing drugs; additionally, after Rodriguez announced on Twitter that his doctor had medically cleared him to play in games, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman responded that Rodriguez's doctor did not have such authority and that Rodriguez should 'shut the fuck up.'" to "While rehabilitating his hip, Rodriguez was embroiled in a series of negative headlines: he became a central figure of the Biogenesis baseball scandal and MLB's investigation into his possible connection to performance-enhancing drugs; additionally, after Rodriguez announced on Twitter that his doctor had medically cleared him to play in games, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman responded that Rodriguez's doctor did not have such authority and that Rodriguez should 'shut the f*** up.'" because the word "fuck" is offensive and inappropriate.

Done—not because it's offensive and inappropriate but because, according to the Manual of Style, quoted material should be presented verbatim. ESPN chose to sanitize it, so we must too. (Like ESPN, I used hyphens, not asterisks.) Rivertorch (talk) 09:11, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

length of suspension

I find:

"On August 5, 2013, he was suspended for 211 games as a result of the investigation, which would keep him off the field through the end of the 2014 MLB season."

Did I hear something about this coming Thursday (2 days after the writing of the message you are reading)? Also, I remember hearing he was to be suspended for the rest of the 2013 season and all of the 2014 season. Where does "211 games" start? (There are 162 games in a regular major-league season.) Would "211 games" be shortened by the appeal we hear A-Rod wants to pursue? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.63.16.20 (talk) 14:46, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

OK, I am hearing the suspension was to have begun today but it's been formally appealled, and I saw a remark that a ruling would be in Nov. or Dec. at the earliest, meaning this season would already be over. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.63.16.20 (talk) 20:22, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

We should probably keep track of all the legal stuff and discuss what should and should not be included in this article. When I see a NYTimes headline like "Lawyer Says Yankees Misled Rodriguez About Injuries", you know things are going to get worse before they get better. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:27, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

This will definitely go in if they file the grievance. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:34, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

The word "However"

In the section: Much of the criticism regarding Rodriguez focuses on his alleged inability to produce hits in clutch situations.[102][103] However, during the 2003–05 regular seasons, Rodriguez posted a .371 batting average with the bases loaded and maintained an on-base percentage of .422. In 2006, his numbers improved to .474 and .500 respectively. In 2007, through July 14 he hit .444 and .455, respectively. Additionally, Rodriguez's other batting lines during this period included a .432 average with a runner on third (.333 in 2006), .381 with a runner in scoring position (.302 in 2006), and .392 with a runner in scoring position and 2 outs (.313 in 2006; .333 in 2007 through July 14).[104] In 2008, Rodriguez hit only .264 with runners in scoring position and two outs. In 95 plate appearances, he walked 20 times and was hit by three pitches, and he had only 19 hits. Of the 41 times A-Rod struck out with two outs, 20 came with runners in scoring position.[64]

The second sentence starts with the word "However". This indicates that the coming sentences will somehow contradict the previous sentence. So what is it? Is Alex unable to produce hits in clutch situations or not? It should be fairly simple to calculate if there is statistically relevant evidence that he misses alot "under pressure", if someone provided me the data. I don't know baseball, I mean, at ALL, so I don't know wtf the text is saying. Data that would be needed is # of clutch situations, misses and hits. Clutch situations would be abit arbitrary to define, but important situations when the game depended on him or such I guess.

If the section, as it is, indeed doesn't disprove the allegation and continues not to do so, then the word "However" should defenitely be removed. It clearly points to having contradictory data.

Error found in minor league career entry

The article erroneously states that Rodriquez " began the season playing for Seattle's AAA affiliate, the Calgary Cannons."

Actually Rodriquez began in his professional career in Appleton, Wisconsin as a member of Seattle's A ball affiliate the Appleton Foxes. Rodriquez played 65 games in Appleton before being promoted to AA where he played 17 games before being promoted to Calgary. Ultimately, before the 1994 season was completed, Rodriquez progressed four levels from A to the major leagues in one season. Former Appleton Foxes pitcher Tom Gordon achieved the same accomplishment in 1988 as a member of the Kansas City Royals organization.

This is the first time I've ever pointed out an error. I'm not planning on actually editing the article, just point out the error since I admittedly have no clue what I'm doing.

Footnote 164 to Alex Rodriguez Article Does Not Support Assertion

Footnote 164 does not support the statement that Alex Rodriguez is an art collector. The espn article cited is satirical, based on a former girlfriend's allegation that Rodriguez had a painting in his house of himself as a Centaur. The author of the espn article then writes a humerous piece of a pretend interview with Rodriguez about his imagined art collection. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:9:902:900:C62C:3FF:FE18:C347 (talk) 03:56, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Alexander Emmanuel "Alex" Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975), nicknamed "A-Rod", is an American professional baseball infielder for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez was one of the sport's most highly touted prospects and is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time.[1][2][3] During his 20-year career, Rodriguez has amassed a .299 batting average, 667 home runs, 2,004 runs batted in (RBIs), and 3,000 hits. He is a 14-time All-Star and has won three American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards, ten Silver Slugger Awards, and two Gold Glove Awards. However, he has led a highly controversial career due to his lucrative contracts and his use of illegal performance-enhancing drugs.[4][5] Scukey1 (talk) 12:56, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

We discuss Wikipedia articles here, we do not talk about real name coincidences and drama happening on other sites. Also, the person posting that comment is a previously blocked user's sockpuppet IP. EvilLair ( | c) 17:16, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia admins do not block for non-disruptive edits and intersite drama. This site is not a court house either, it's a user-contributed encyclopedia on which we are supposed to use talk pages for the sole purpose of discussing the article. You have an account that was blocked from here years ago for violating Wikipedia policies (though I can't yet prove this because IP's change over time).
-EDIT: Checkusers only scan IP's if the user is suspected of sockpuppetry and vandalism (and sometimes other purposes such as verifying account links). Without evidence, there's no reason to check my IP, and this is my only account. EvilLair ( | c) 18:22, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Also, please read the notice at the top of the talk page before using a player's talk page to spread intersite drama:
"This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Alex Rodriguez article.
This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject." - EvilLair ( | c) 18:31, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

...guess it's true. Sorry folks. I was telling the truth, but it's true that intersite discussion problems cannot be done here. But I just wanted to tell what's been happening. 50.29.199.144 (talk) 18:40, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

The first paragraph under the heading "Biogenesis baseball scandal" refers to August 3 and "for much of the summer" without specifying a year.
