"Aldersgate" origin
[edit]I was under the impression that the name Aldersgate is derived from the street Aldersgate within The City (Aldersgate Street is the street that leads up to it from without) The "gate" would have been called Aldersgate Bar, in keeping with the other bars, ie Temple Bar The origin of the word "gate" in Aldersgate comes from the Danish for street, commonly to be found in English towns and cities within the Danelaw.
