[edit]

The Cyber Republic of the Boer Nation is not Afrikaner Nationalism because Afrikaner Nationalism was a movement which incorporated all White Afrikaans speaking peoples of which the vast majority of whom were of Cape Dutch origin. The Boers were & are still only a PORTION of the White Afrikaans speaking people as the Boers are the descendents of the Trekboers who trekked out of the the south western Cape region & thus AWAY from the Cape Dutch population beginning in the late 1600s & all throughout the 1700s. The Boers developed on the north eastern Cape frontier & were historically a distinct entity from the folks who were labeled Cape Dutch as the two groups were not formally lumped together until AFTER the second Anglo-Boer War & particularly from the 1930s onwards. When one talks about Afrikaner Nationalism one is referring to that specific movement of the 20th cent which involved a COALITION of Cape Dutch & Boer population groups. BUT Boer Nationalism was OFTEN at odds with Afrikaner Nationalism because Boer Nationalists wanted to restore the Boer Republics - as they attempted to do during the Maritz Rebellion of 1914 / then again during the late 1940s only to be stopped by the Afrikaner establishment [ including the National Party the main political voice of Afrikaner Nationalism ] / & of course once against from the 1970s onwards when the Afrikaner Nationalists refused to consider Boer independence once again. A notable Boer Republican named Robert van Tonder LEFT the National Party in 1961 [ the same year that the usurper Verwoerd turned South Africa into a nominal republic ] in order to advocate for the restoration of the Boer Republics full time as he felt that turning South Africa into a nominal republic was a betrayal of the Boers & of the Boer Republics. [ 1 ] Robert van Tonder & Boer Nationalists were massively opposed / derided & even attacked by the Afrikaner Nationalists. Afrikaner Nationalism was & STILL is a massive obstacle to Boer Nationalism because the Afrikaners are more DOMINANT & much better funded to the smaller & poorer Boer population.

The neo-Boernationalistic ideology being promoted by certain current internet writers is devoid of anthropological and historical substance. Each and every leader of the boer republics viewed themselves as part of the Dutch-speaking Afrikaner population. This includes Presidents Paul Kruger, Marthinus Steyn, Johan Brand and trek heroes such as Andries Pretorius and Sarel Cilliers and after-war boer leaders such as JBM Hertzog. The solidarity showed by the Afrikaners living in the Cape colony with their beleaguered kindred during the Anglo-Boer war during which more than 5000 Afrikaner-rebels joined forces with the Afrikaners of the interior under threat of execution for treason exemplifies this. The people who are arguing that there ever was or is a distinct ethnic and cultural difference between Afrikaners and Boers should crawl back from the hole which has spawned them, because they are defiling the history of our people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.242.13.108 (talk) 09:12, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I got to agree with you on that one. Sure there are regional differences, but they do exist among other nations as well. Lot's of this Super-Boers also show marks of sectarianism. --41.150.53.225 (talk) 08:30, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

History leading up to the formulation of the ideology

[edit]

Very little is said about the historic factors which contributed and led to the formulation of the ideology. No ideology can garner widespread support from a general population such as the Afrikaners (currently numbering more that 3 million people) without a broad range of factors which leads up to its formulation and acceptance.

Factors not mentioned are the independent spirited farmers who descended from the Dutch, German and French settlers who started an exodus from the British held territory of the Cape colony, who had peaceful tradings and alliances with some of the native tribes such as the Barolong but who also warred with others such as the Zulu and Matabele who until that time had layd waste to the South African interior with brutal wars, massacre and holocaust.

The formation of several boer_republics, the violent overthrow of those republics by Imperial Brittain, killing 28000 civilians and children in the process and the subjection of Afrikaners to human right violations during and after the war are all factors who contributed to create an atmosphere were Afrikaner nationalism was accepted and clinged to by a downtrodden people trying to lift themselves up from a scene of total destruction and humiliation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.242.13.108 (talk) 09:00, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV in section "Popular media"

[edit]

Using one writer's opinion with an anti-Afrikaner bias that Afrikaners were a "imagined community" to substantiate this paragraph does not provide a neutral point of view. It would have been very hard to just "dream up" the existence of Afrikaners. I would contest that these writers were merely laying down their perception of historical facts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.242.13.108 (talk) 09:32, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't write it, but my guess is it was intended as a reference to Benedict Anderson's imagined community concept of nationalism (I added a link in the article as well), not a non-neutral version of the facts. Sgelbman (talk) 16:29, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Afrikaner Nationalism = White Nationalism?

[edit]

At the bottom of this article among the related links is a link to the "White Nationalism" wiki article. In what way can we justify that connection? The only connection is that it is a form of nationalism for a European-derived people. Afrikaner nationalism would be the nationalism for the Afrikaner ethnic group. Had it been a nationalism for all "Whites" or Europeans in South Africa then I could most definitely see the connection. Should we remove the link? This article is generally very good, however there was an impartial suggestion that Afrikaner Nationalism had close links to, or was, fundamentally anti-semetic. This is in line with a certain liberal perception, and post-modern historical tendency to assume that all regimes with racial and/or discriminatory agendas are based on the same set of fundamental principles of discrimination. This is to buy into a stereotype.

The Afrikaner Nationalist government was a firm ally of Israel, from 1948, and worked with that country on several military, cultural and governmental initiatives throughout the existance of the Apartheid state. As can be seen in the Wiki on Jews in South Africa, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews_in_South_Africa , Jews in South Africa, whilst not free from discrimination and/or bigotry, were in no way treated or discriminated in the same way in which the Nazi's did to the Jews of Europe.

It defames the immense pain of the Shoah to suggest that Afrikaner Nationalism was in anyway similar to the systemic destruction of the Jewish people of Europe.
