Merge from List of African American philosophers

[edit]

I merged in the list from List of African American philosophers since this list is ostensibly the same, but longer. I have no opinion as to whether various names actually belong or not William M. Connolley (talk) 10:55, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think merging the list of African American philosophers was a wise choice. Africana Philosophy is a very interdisciplinary field within philosophy and therefore, many Africana philosophers are also writers, advocates, activists, etc. AshBlue (talk) 18:11, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fascinating information, AshBlue. I wasn't sure I would find this topic interesting at first, but it was! Great job editing! Jla4890 (talk) 20:38, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

merged in content from African philosophy

[edit]

hey all,

I just merged in the entire content of the African philosophy page and redirected it here. It appears that the distinction between "African" and "Africana" philosophy is not supported by reliable sources, so this was a content fork. The other article had some bizarre confusion between the African philosophical tradition and philosophers who happened to be born on the continent of Africa - and the name "Africana" is used commonly enough that I felt it was justified to use that name as the primary page for this content - at best, "Africana" is a more encompassing name for the tradition, if they are not synonyms.

As for the removed content, if there is a need for it, another article could always be made for List of philosphers born on the African continent if others feel that that is an appropriate page to have, but I'm admittedly skeptical that there's really any value in a list that has Ptahhotep, Plotinus, Maimonides, and Frantz Fanon all considered part of the same category... - car chasm (talk) 05:33, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot stress how strange you decision sound to me, there is not a single interwiki that does the same, to say that the distinction between African and Africana philosophy is 'not supported by reliable sources' is truly absurd, i have to be honest with you. 'Africana philosophy' is a term restricted to the north american context, this doesnt make it invalid, but as with the 'afro-caribbean philosophy', it should be treated with its own article, with its own history and thinking. Many african philosophers recognize both as 'exogenous africa's' but this doesnt mean they should be merged.
I have the intent to undo this, because I truly think this is doesnt help with the comprehension and study of both traditions involved. If anyone would like to say anything, in favour or against, please speak, i am open to counter-arguments. JoaquimCebuano (talk) 23:45, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

List of Africana philosophers

[edit]

I've removed the "List of Africana philosophers", which is completely unsourced. This article really needs better sourcing overall. — The Anome (talk) 10:55, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
