[edit]Litfaßsäule seem to be common also in neighbouring Poland so I am wondering if they also have a characteristic Polish name. So far I can only find "słup reklamowy". Does this just literally mean "advertising column" and is it the only name in Poland? — Hippietrail (talk) 10:59, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Litfaßsäule
[edit]Why is “Litfaßsäule” still spelled with an “ß”, even if it is pronounced with a short “a”? --84.61.148.133 (talk) 21:09, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- It is spelled with an "ß" because it is a compound word whose first component – "Litfaß" – is a proper name and therefore exempted from normal German spelling rules which don't apply to proper names.

Is “Litfaßsäule” the last German word with an “ß” after a short vowel? --84.61.148.133 (talk) 21:11, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

18th century
[edit]Is it possible the concept of the advertising column is older than Morris or Litfass? In the Russian Charter for Public Order or the Police (Устав Благочиния или Полицейской) of 1786, dividing each city into sections and quarters, there is a prescription that "in each quarter there should be a column for the purposes of nailing up advertisements (в каждом квартале иметь столб ради прибивания объявления)." You can see the passage here, at the top of page 47: https://www.prlib.ru/item/388866#v=d&z=3&n=5&i=580839_doc1_73D5DB09-9E0D-41FF-B897-0A713E0B631D.tiff&y=349&x=574
I can't find a contemporary illustration of such a column anywhere so far, but it would be very interesting if these columns were spreading throughout Europe 60 years or more before their presumed invention. 65.95.36.225 (talk) 08:16, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
