Anxiety among adults
[edit]Anxiety has become more prevalent among adults. Here is an article I found to support this statement: https://www.sciencedirect.com/Annaaho (talk) 01:54, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
This article was the subject of an educational assignment in 2013 Q1. Further details were available on the "Education Program:Florida International University/Advanced Experimental Psychology Lab (Spring 2013)" page, which is now unavailable on the wiki. |

Suggestions
[edit]The introduction would benefit greatly from more citations. NoahStubbs (talk) 20:54, 4 March 2021 (UTC) /* Suggestions */ I noticed the same thing. I think that the introduction is not well organized and certain subjects need to be expanded. A lot of citations are missing Anxhiah (talk) 00:12, 6 May 2021 (UTC) I noticed a grammatical error in the "Normative physical changes in adulthood" section. In reference to hearing aides, the word "leaves" is used when it should be "leave." I'm going to correct this error. 2605:7FC0:0:102:8006:980B:7B7A:9D87 (talk) 19:01, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
Timo Green (talk) 06:03, 21 January 2021 (UTC) Hello everyone. I am a part of an Adult Development class at Brigham Young University - Idaho. I had noticed some information on the page that was considered speculation and theory that is borderline fringe science. I suggest that those inclusions be removed as they are not backed by any sources and could come across as bias. An example of this would be found in the "lead" section that describes the life lengthening properties of olive oil.
Kpizarro24 (talk) 05:04, 8 October 2020 (UTC) I am also new to the Wikipedia page and attending BYU- Idaho so bare with me. In the article I noticed that it mentioned depression is higher in older people. I am not a doctor but I know that in adult development there is a lot of people now days that have anxiety and depression and we should find credible sources that prove this and add that in. As well as postpartum I just feel there is a lack of those things in this article that is a crucial part of adult development.
Consider reading up on Dr. Waldinger's work on Adult Development. He is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Principal Investigator of the Close Relationships Project, and Co-Director of the Study of Adult Development at Brigham and Women's Hospital. His research focuses on how intimate relationships are shaped by and shape our experiences of mental and physical health.(MKTownley (talk) 04:19, 29 June 2011 (UTC)).
- Sounds like a good plan! --MTHarden (talk) 14:43, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
Hey classmate! I edited your article a little bit. I fixed a grammatical mistake, and Robert J. Waldinger doesn't have a page on Wikipedia, so your link was red and didn't work, so I took it out. This article lacks a good format, sufficent information on possible causes for the disorder, or possible medical help for the disorder. If I were to edit this page I would start with reformating and adding correct information from accredited soureces.--Troywj22 (talk) 01:24, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello, I am Marina and I am part of a group of students from Florida International University who are working in an assignment to revise and expand this article. We propose to make the following changes and additions: Change the introduction so that it provides an easier and more descriptive introduction for the topic of adult development and the rest of the wiki article. Expand on each of the metatheories since understanding the theoretical frameworks is important to better understand how research approaches the study of development in adulthood. Add a section describing the major theories (Biological and Connectionist) that are used to approach the study of adulthood, and describe the major ideas behind each one in order to further elaborate on adult development's history and study. Add examples of some of the most prominent programmed theories and error theories, as well as brief descriptions of each in order to show the differences in both theories regarding aging and it's interaction with biological and environmental variables. Add a section for sociocultural theories so that to highlight on the different kinds of "stages of life" that famous theorists have proposed. Add a section of Life satisfaction as it describes a more spiritual and positive aspect of aging. Add a section where aging is defined and categorized in relationship to adult development, in order to show how aging effects the development throughout an adult's life. Discuss the different illnesses associated with aging so that to educate the reader on the negative effects of aging on the human body and mind. Move the "Studies" section to the end of the Wiki article because it would be an efficient way to end the article with current studies being done in the field of adult development and the future of the study, as well as adding a few sentences about the future of adult development and the furthering of research that is needed. Constructive feedback on these potential changes would be very much appreciated, Thanks in advance, MTmarc (talk) 02:28, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- Welcome Marina! Plans sound good. Please remember that Wikipedia is not an academic paper or essay. Wikipedia articles should not be based on WP:primary sources, but on reliable, published secondary sources (for instance, journal reviews and professional or advanced academic textbooks) and, to a lesser extent, on tertiary sources (such as undergraduate textbooks). WP:MEDRS describes how to identify reliable sources for medical information, which is a good guideline for many psychology articles as well. With friendly regards, Lova Falk talk 14:43, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hello! I would also suggest a simple, more structured lead. As The term adult development refers to the adult stage in development, and not the legal term 'adult' that information might not be as relevant as defining the psychological stipulations of what it means to be an adult. 27 March 2014 Hello, we are the adult development (Psyc 315) class at the University of Richmond. With the supervision of our professor, Dr. Jane Berry, we have been working on content for this page all semester. Our work is in response to an initiative launched by the Association for Psychological Science (APS) to improve pages in the psychological and behavioral sciences. We are uploading those significant changes today, and are integrating them with the existing material. We welcome comments and suggestions about our work to the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Blairjames4 (talk • contribs) 15:01, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
I am a student at BYU-Idaho and am taking an Adult Development class. I am new to wikipedia so please bear with me! As I was reading, I came across a couple of sections where I think more recent sources should be put in the article. First, in the "Daniel Levinson's theory" section, only one source is applied. Does anybody know any other sources that could be included? And also, do you think it's needed? Secondly, in the "Mental health in adulthood and old age" section, there seems to be a lot of older sources. Does anyone know any more recent sources or research that could be added here? Do you think this is needed? Rebekah Feller (talk) 05:19, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
The lead is over-detailed. There are viewpoints over/underrepresented. The article has some grammatical and spelling errors. The images aren't well captioned. The images aren't laid out in a visually appealing way. There aren't any conversations going on inside the talk page. The article provides some meaningful content, but most readers should need more to fully understand this topic. Providing references to reliable sources should come first; the article also needs substantial improvement in content and organization. Also improve the grammar, spelling, writing style, and improve the jargon use. It's underdeveloped, but a good start!--205.185.107.15 (talk) 01:03, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- I agree that the lead was over-detailed. The lead should be simplified so that there's a basic overview which introduces what will be discussed later. This article is a good start, but it is underdeveloped and needs some work. My suggestion would be to expand on the theories which shaped our understanding of adult development. More citations would be needed, but the citations that are currently used are credible and appropriate.
- 204.8.62.116 (talk) 02:54, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
I think that the article could benefit from being reorganized. There is a lot of information here and I think that making it flow better would help with comprehension and appeal in finishing the entire article. I think I would try opening it off with the different developmental theories like it does and then progressing through adult life in different sections. Within each of those sections, you could add the physiological changes and disorders instead of making those an entirely different section. Zanerichmond713 (talk) 00:38, 26 September 2023 (UTC) I think the article could benefit from a section referring to pregnancy and how that affects adult development.Tsuki2023 (talk) 04:45, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
- I agree with this. I thought the lead was not very laid out and could have benefited greatly from being more precise on the break down of the sections. I also felt that at times this was a little bit too wordy and the sections could have been more clear in general. I also think visually there could have been more done. The pictures were basically outlined but nothing too interesting. Overall I think the article could be more engaging and not as wordy. Snowhammer (talk) 02:28, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Carl Jung's theory
[edit]This article on the section "Carl Jung's theory" is missing cited sources. I would go back and add a source just to be clear that the information is up to date and not biased. (Kassperkin (talk) 20:38, 30 September 2020 (UTC))
→I added one source to the youth part. Should there be a separate source for each of Carl Jung's stages or will one suffice? If one is enough, where does it properly go if representing multiple lines? KarriAnderson (talk) 02:20, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
Student suggestions, September 2020
[edit]Hello, I am a student from a Adult Development class from BYUI and I'm new to editing on Wikipedia. I was looking through this article and thought it could use some work relating to organization, content and adding references, page numbers for the references, etc. Regarding organization, I think the "Normative physical changes in adulthood" needs to be its own heading, right now its a subheading under "Contemporary and classic theories" which doesn't really make sense. I also think some of the theories could be expanded on. As of now, Erikson's theory seems to be the only one that is fully fleshed out. The others seem to have scarce information on them compared to Erikson's theory so I think that seems a little imbalanced. Lastly, some references take you to a website where you either need access through an institution or to pay to read an article. I was just wondering if these references need to be changed so that the articles referenced are a little more easily accessible? TrishHendricks (talk) 23:45, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
Erikson's theory
[edit]I noticed that although this is an article about adult development, the explanation of the different stages in Erik Erikson's theory stop after adolescence. I was thinking about adding in information in those three sections (Intimacy vs. Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, Integrity vs. Despair) so that those reading this section will better understand what happens in these stages and the consequences of them as well. I haven't gathered my sources yet for this, but I will before I make any edits.TooManyCookes (talk) 04:03, 2 October 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by TooManyCookes (talk • contribs) 03:56, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
Intelligence in adulthood expansion
[edit]It seems like this section could be expanded to include more information on environmental factors that contribute to changes in adult intelligence. Particularly, sources with a more sociocultural perspective on this topic could provide a wider range of knowledge on how intelligence in adulthood is subject to change. Oliviaherzog (talk) 00:04, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- I agree! I think there was an imbalance of a huge focus on the physical aspects of aging including the diseases, but not enough on the mental, emotional, and psychosocial aspects. Some were mentioned such as relationships and family, but they were much smaller sections that seemed to just be easy to brush over. A more balanced approach in addressing several different parts of aging including intelligence in adulthood would be a powerful change. This can also relate to how older people are regarded with more wisdom in regard to their life experiences. AriannaLarson (talk) 05:56, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
Jamesna1, Kpizarro24, Ehunter0711, AddieRob, Star59045, Cwobrock, MaloneandStockton, Khleeb, and Marilake1998, make sure that you are adhering to WP:MEDRS-compliant sources when adding medical/health material...unless it's simply history material or social material that doesn't require WP:MEDRS-compliant sources. Parkinson's Edit
[edit]I have made some edits to the article, most especially in the Parkinson's section. I would appreciate any feedback you may have as I'm new to this. I felt like the section needed newer sources and some rephrasing. Any thoughts? Thanks. ABeautifulDayToday (talk) 07:11, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
I am glad that you realized that as well about the Parkinson's Disease section. I thought that it needed updating, and maybe a little clearer description of what happens to someone that has it. I noticed that a lot of the dates for the sources are getting fairly old. It would be nice to find more sources that were recent for a lot of the material. Does anyone agree with that? Katelyncox (talk) 00:59, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
illnesses that come with old age
[edit]Hello everyone, my name is Sarah and I'm brand new to this side of Wikipedia. Something that I noticed in this article was that in the section of illnesses that the elderly can get, they don't go into the specifics of what kinds of cancers are at at most risk and which gender is more at risk to get them. Something else that I wondered could be discussed more, is societal influences on development and how SES plays a role in an adults development. thank you, Sarahprice52 (talk) 22:26, 20 January 2021 (UTC)Sarah Price
Section on Robert Kegan's Model of Development
[edit]Given that Robert Kegan is one of the most prominent theorists as far as adult development, I propose that we add a section on Kegan's Model of Development with particular reference to the three stages that characterize adulthood/ adult development. He provides percentages of adults in and between these three adulthood plateau's of development that should be included. We should link to relevant Wikipedia pages like Robert Kegan and consider similar uses of charts here. I have students that could work on this. Please let me know if you have any comments or concerns. Grateful to be a part of the Wikipedia community and thank you. Jskalski (talk) 20:51, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Alyssabeyler (talk) 05:08, 27 September 2022 (UTC)This report was done well. Adult development is a gradual development, just like ones developing in adolescence. One suggestion I would make to this article would be to put a picture of a young adult, then a picture of an older adult (through the lifespan). Thank you again for your great work.
Concept of this article
[edit]My expectation when I came across this article was that it would cover the transition from adolescence to adulthood. I probably got that idea from the section where it mentions "age of majority" and how this varies across cultures, though I found it somewhat amusing that a statute declaring the "age of majority" would even be relevant to this issue (aside from the responsibilities that are likely to occur based on the age of majority, e.g. parenthood).
Don't get me wrong. Just because I feel I'm being subjected to something akin to cognitive dissonance when I peruse this article, that doesn't mean I think it's totally without some redeeming value. My sense is that it would be improved by dividing into multiple articles that have greater coherence.
That said, I'm not going to pretend that my 20-minute analysis of this article will enable me to come up with the definitively best approach, but I suspect there are other readers who may sense a similar ambivalence regarding this article, and that this brief comment might help others to validate such feelings. Perhaps it would even evolve into a consensus. Fabrickator (talk) 06:39, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

Overlaps significantly with another entry: Positive Adult Development
[edit]I'm surprised that this entry and the entry for Positive adult development apparently make no mention of each other, yet cover some of the same material. It feels like they should be consolidated to some degree. Note also that the entry for Developmental Psychology apparently only links to this entry, not the other. In the meantime I will try to interlink the two entries. Nick (talk) 03:09, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
More could be added to preventive nutrition and exercise before old age
[edit]Hi! I am a psychology student at BYU-I and we were tasked with helping to add and review articles. This one seems pretty good in content overall and with good descriptions. There are a few sections that seem crowded and even with some "fluff" information that doesn't add to the topic. but overall, it is a good page. On the topic of health and exercise for adults, I've noticed there are some mentions of diets, but no research or articles with more explanations linked to it (I'd be happy to link articles, and I probably will). There's also not a lot about the importance of strength training and muscular development for healthy aging, and improving quality of life. I will try to get some good links and research to add to the page and contribute the best I can.205.185.107.54 (talk) 16:23, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
