explanation

[edit]

Another contributor has started changing the reference to all the captives who have been transferred to their internee security numbers for "is" to "was". I have told them I believe this is a mistake, because it implies that the captive has been cleared. This is untrue. The Department of Defense continues to classify all but a handful of the former captives as "enemy combatants". Geo Swan (talk) 22:27, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed it in a few articles when the individual of the BLP has been released from Guantanamo and is not anymore prisoner of the United States.
Guantanamo detainees have ISN's regardless if they are classified as "enemy combatants" or not.
It is right to say "his Guantanamo Internee Security Number was..." once they have been released.
I also checked a lot of newspapers. All use "was" (in context with the number) when they speak about a prisoner that has been released.
After my explanation and checking this information i would like to change it back to "was" here in this article. And do so in other articles where it is absolute clear that the individual is not anymore a prisoner of the United States. Is this ok with you? IQinn (talk) 08:05, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I continue to feel this is a mistake -- misleading -- because it incorrectly implies they have been cleared of suspicion.
FWIW the record shows that the DoD continued to be suspicious even of the 38 NLEC captives. Geo Swan (talk) 16:31, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
