Question on text

It is claimed that the abbey was "disestablished 1539". What does this mean, please? It seems it didn't close, as later abbots can be named. Granted the role changed as it became a seminary, and the orders of religious involved changed. It seems to me that closure of the abbey followed the French Revolution, 250 years after 1539.
