You might look up information on the calligramme and related things. --Daniel C. Boyer 18:24, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Pre-computer

I would be interested in having some acknowledgment on the page that the roots of ASCII art must predate the computer era, as people were making pictures out of letters a long time before that. --Daniel C. Boyer 15:27 15 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Can you cite any publications that use letter based pictures? LarryW 19:14, 1 Aug 2003 (UTC)
I've been looking at examples of concrete poetry. Some of that might match the "pre-computer" aspect you are interested in. LarryW 15:47, 2 Aug 2003 (UTC)
I know I saw a handmade typewriter-based image in a book (possibly even in my possession) some time ago; it was a beautiful picture of Queen Elizabeth II – but now, of course, I'm unable to find the book... Oh well, maybe I'll be able locate it somewhere, I'll keep you posted.
--Wernher 01:28, 16 Nov 2003 (UTC)
The first ASCII image that I saw was back in the 60's. It didn't use a computer. It used a Ham radio RTTY Teletypewriter and had been punched on a Paper tape. Persumably it had been composed by hand (computers were pretty scarce back then). It sure blew me away...
About two weeks ago (circa June 2004) I saw on Ripley's Believe It or Not a fellow in India? who was doing absolutly amazing things with a manual typewriter and colored ribbions. He was making huge photoquality images, one page at a time.

Typewriter art does not belong under the category of ASCII Art because it was often created by overlapping characters (partially or fully). --Mekanik 20:46, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)
That's somewhat arguable as its a bit of a gray area. ASCII is just a standard method of character encoding. There were teletypes (which allowed for overstriking) which used ASCII encoding rather than five-level (5-bit) Baudot / ITA2 encoding. There is evidence of overstrike art created from teletype machines using ASCII character encoding. —RaD Man (talk) 11:18, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

ASCII Art Alphabets

Does anyone have some characters from a simple ASCII Art based alphabet to contribute to ASCII art? LarryW 01:47, 2 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Here's one from China. It doesn't accept some characters like exclamation mark. The results are quite big, so they may not be "simple". --Menchi 01:57, Aug 2, 2003 (UTC)

Auto-generated image example

Does someone have a better auto-generated image that that one of Bush-II to show off that technique? Bevo 00:42, 20 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Yeah, the Bush one is hard to see on any font size. And it's too big. --Menchi 00:44, 20 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I think if we go smaller it's not very recognizable... - Hephaestos 15:42, 27 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Regarding the blackbird photo we use in the article now, could someone with better Wikipedia/HTML image scaling knowledge than me try and scale the photo to match the (vertical) size of the generated ASCII art picture? It would give the section a somewhat more instructive look'n'feel.
--Wernher 01:28, 16 Nov 2003 (UTC)

block style?

i was shocked to find no mention of the 'block style' ascii, composed of control characters 176-178 and 219-223, that dominated the BBS scene in the early 90s. i'd write the section myself, but im no expert or archivist in the matter. maybe some lip service to the BBS promo file too? surely it influenced the scene enough to merit a mention. PopeFauveXXIII 7-25, 02:46 PST

That's not ASCII. Read the definition.--Grue 13:38, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Neither is "Japanese ASCII Art" (or "AA") and several other self-proclaimed styles of "ASCII art". A good majority of text-oriented character art makes use of non-ASCII compliant characters, such as ANSI art and Amiga ASCII art which uses supersets of ASCII. I've started ANSI art and Shift-JIS art articles to help address this. —RaD Man (talk) 11:07, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

wow, there's no entry for ANSI art, either.

This has since been remedied. —RaD Man (talk) 11:07, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I propose the development of an ASCII Art Gallery, showcasing the finest works from all schools of ASCII art (including the controversial neo-symbolistic and "leet" pseudo-style). A professional ASCII art curator would be ideal, however I realize the appropriately experienced are in rare supply. I am willing to donate some works from my private collection, some of which were purchased from the most notable ASCII art auctions in the world. ✈ James C. 07:42, 2004 Aug 8 (UTC)

  • What is this "leet" pseudo-style of ASCII you refer to, pray tell? —RaD Man (talk) 11:13, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Please look at User contributions of 66.24.33.166. The front page of the linked site stays it is for sale. Self-promo vandal? I'm now going to remove it from everywhere except this page, because, probably, it really has some relevance to ASCII art; although maybe if the value of the link is not very high, we should remove it anyway as a deterrent measure against using WP as an ad bulletin. If we want to retain it, maybe a better place for the link (if anywhere) should be at Mona Lisa? I didn't delete it from there either. BACbKA 22:18, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I deleted it from both places since, thanks to Hadal for additional insights on spam-fighting on WP. BACbKA 08:07, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I'm not so sure that it was intended as SPAM. It seems to be a legitimate piece of artwork which has travelled across the US to various technology museums, such as the Computer History Museum. It did however make its way into the computer art scene article, an irrelevant contribution, so I removed it. As for its placement in the ASCII art article, it was borderline enough (IMHO), so I left it in. —RaD Man (talk) 11:11, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Techniques

I think the site should make better mention of different techniques such as line ('^^-..,__) shape ,d8P"*4b,_ and shade ##WW8800YYII((:: (Hmmm, I think this would look better in a fixed width font) .

Types of ASCII ART

Another example I've stumble a long time ago is 3D drawing using orthogonal projection. Here's an example of such drawing.

    ____ ____ ____ ____
   /\ \/\ \/\ \/\ \
  / \___\ \___\ \___\ \___\
  \ / __/_/ / / / / /
   \/_/\ \__/\/___/\/___/
     / \___\ / \___\
     \ / __/_ _\ / /
      \/_/\ \/\ \/___/
        / \__/ \___\
        \ / _\ / /
         \/_/\ \/___/
           / \___\
           \ / /
            \/___/

Consider if it is suitable for the main article.

Perhaps. Of course, I might be biased as I used that quite a bit in my ascii art (http://michaelb.org/tophatman/), back when I still did that stuff... michaelb 19:05, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

What am I looking at here?

What's that large mass of ASCII art near the top of the page supposed to represent? I can't seem to figure it out.

No idea. I reverted it since it seems broken. The image in question:

I don't think it's worthy of inclusion, anyway; I think the page is already oversaturated with examples of ASCII art. - JustSomeKid
i've just changed it to display in the standard proportional font rather than a fixed width font and its now pretty obvious that its mario riding on yoshi ;) However proportional ascii art is a compatibility nightmare and that peice is still a bit too big to put in the article directly ;)
see LUEshi. That's how I found this page actually. The Ungovernable Force 08:34, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Solid Style

There should be better mention of the Solid style, both with Standard Characters (such as Allen Mullen's works http://www.arkworld.com/ascii/ (His own homepage seems down, sadly) and the Dos Artscene style, also, I don't think the dithering example is that good, this image of Abraham Lincoln is much better: http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/ascii/junkyard/techstuff/tutorials/Allen_Mullen.html Sad that no large examples are allowed, since they would allow much more detail. Maybe we could save some large example as a Gif image or something. 惑乱 分からん 17:26, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Advanced ASCII-art

What about the terminal-font-based ASCII art many warez groups have in their NFO's or coloured ASCII-art?

--> ANSI art

What do you mean? I added recently the references to "Block" or "High" ASCII art (no colors) that is limited to the PC ASCII scene, because it uses a proprietary extended Character Set unique to IBM PC's. This style was especially popular for ASCII Logos used in PC Group NFO Files. Some argue that this is ANSI and not ASCII, but I disagree. It is ANSI, if special ANSI Escape codes are used for color and style formatting. This is not the case for "Block" ASCII's.. I am doing ASCII and ANSI for over 14 years now and there was no discussion about "Block" ASCII being ASCII or ANSI until the era of the Internet and the replacement of Text based User Interfaces like MS DOS with Graphical User Interfaces (Windows 95 and later). --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 13:58, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

ASCII Art Groups Section Cleanup

The Section was littered with links to forums and news groups and worse. I cleaned up the section and added following comments to it for people who want to add another Art Group.

Check first if an Entry for the Group exists in Wikipedia. If it does, link to the Wikipedia entry.
You might link to the Groups Official Website if no Wikipedia entry exists.
Please provide background information at the ASCII art Talk Page for Groups without Wikipedia entry.
No Forums or Newsgroups allowed!

I would like to know opinions about my comments. I would like to have external links to real ASCII Art Groups until an Entry at Wikipedia for the Group was created. If the number of groups becomes to big, a separate page or category for ASCII art Groups should be created. Thanks. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 13:44, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I removed all Groups and replaced it with the Link to Category Artscene groups. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 14:07, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

ISBN for Typewriter Art

I can't find a book with that ISBN number anywhere on the web. Barnes and Noble has a paperback "Typewriter art" listed under "Typewriter Art Dan Carlinsky

Format: Paperback

Pub. Date: April 1978 " don't know if this is the same one, and it's not available, but it's something. IBN #0843104333

Cleaned up

I cleaned up the article quite a bit, creating one new section (Uses for ASCII art) and editing the overall language and structure. I removed some parts that seemed redundant or unnecessary, including the instructions about viewing block ASCII in Windows (I don't think it belongs in an encyclopedia article) and two Amiga ASCII pictures. Yes, they're very nice, but I think that one (or actually two examples) is enough.

The article is still way too long and would need some pruning. I don't think we need such a huge amount of links, especially when it comes to the converter programs. The main link list could perhaps be organized into subcategories. The part about block ASCII seems unnecessarily long.

I felt confident to remove the "This article or section seems not to be written in the formal tone expected of an encyclopedia entry." flag, but if you think the article still needs it feel free to reintroduce it - or revise the article further.

DiamonDie 20:35, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Good job so far DiamonDie. The Article is a mess, I agree. Not to mention the tons of useless external links that litter the article. It might be a good idea to create separate articles for each major "style" and/or "scene" of/within ascii art and have the article stick to the basics, but reference the new articles. The different "uses", "styles" and "scenes" add quite some complexity to the whole topic which should be explained somehow. As I already said, for some of it would be a separate article a good solution IMO. What do you think? Cya at deviantART --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 14:34, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Two links to Modern Mechanics article

There are two links to the same 1948 article from Modern Mechanics under "Other links". The first is listed as "Page 181 from October 1948 edition of Popular Mechanics" and the second is listed as "ASCII art in 1948"

Thanks for the info. I removed the dupe. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 15:47, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Color ASCII

I modified the bird image by adding HTML color tags, which is mentioned in the Overprinting section. It looks terrible, though, because the <font color> tags are not recognized by Wiki. Could someone can figure out how this should work, or maybe convert this into a PNG image? - Loadmaster 20:21, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Cool. Thanks. So it is good enough to add to the article? - Loadmaster 23:48, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Grammar in Animated Section

This section was one of the most poorly written things I've ever read. I went through it quickly and fixed the glaring errors (which is to say, I fixed about 30 things in 3-4 paragraphs), but it could probably use a more dedicated effort, if anyone feels up to it. Also, I'm not sure the outside links are done in typical fashion, but I don't really know. And If you're interested, look at the history on that part, because the writing atrocious to an amusing degree. Powrtoch 03:23, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism

Apparently 68.175.33.245 (hencforth 'no good dirty rotten detracting soccer mom') vandalised the page by removing removing all un-christian and uncouth material: humping, ass, boobs etc. please remain vigilant. thank you. Schafer out. --71.107.101.11 08:42, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't see why they are entirely necessary. This page's point is to inform about what this art is. I understand that it still is vandalism, per se, but I believe that the inappropriate ones are entirely important. Mdesrosii 00:33, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

I cant tell you how long i have been looking for this page. A week ago, i didnt even know what ASCII was, can there be more links to this page and more searchable items. ASCII is too esoteric a term for a laymen to find on search, include terms like "Word Processor Art" or "Text drawing". Lots of people are looking for ASCII Art, help make their search more easier.--Xlegiofalco 20:05, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Pre-computer examples

This is the same sort of thing as the 1948 example (the soldiers are actually quite similar) but it is from a 1919 edition of Punch magazine. [1] This actual edition is here (cartoon is near the bottom). [2] --JGGardiner 21:36, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

The link is http://www.gutenberg.org/files/12079/12079-h/12079-h.htm; search for "typist". It looks like the typist did not adhere to fixed-width rows and columns in creating the image, though. — Loadmaster 15:51, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Cleanup

I've made some pretty major edits to the article in order to clean it up a bit. [3] Whilst doing this however, I removed a number of the examples, which were in my opinion cluttering the article. If anybody feels that the examples I removed belong in the article, then please instead upload it as an image so it can be scaled and aligned to look similar to other articles, thanks. What happened to the list of software

I remember there was a list of ASCII art software. What happened to it? The article is now quite useless, because it doesn't mention any of the popular tools used to create or generate aa . Even JavE is mentioned only in passing in the section on "ASCII animation". Also notice that many links of the form "ASCII art#blablabla" now point to nowhere because some sections were moved or removed. Also, no link or mention of alt.ascii-art newsgroup?  Grue  19:07, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

The problem with broken sub-article links is unsolvable from this end - that's the trouble with links to categories; they change too much to be reliable link targets. (Just because somebody links to a badly organized article doesn't mean the bad organization is locked forever._ This article badly needed cleanup and re-organization; if too much was removed, can you return what you think is needed? - DavidWBrooks 21:36, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
I addressed the problem of the broken links, they should all be functional now. Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 04:54, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

ASCII Video

Doesent this deserve a mention i watched the england v pourtugal match via ascii —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.143.27.120 (talk) 22:34, 7 December 2006 (UTC).

This is done via software that converts images to ascii (or video in this case). No artist was creating those videos. The article is about ASCII art, created by HAND, character by character by a human who entered each letter or character for a reason, no algorithm. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 21:57, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I don't think you are correct, roy. There is the chapter 'Methods for generating ASCII art' that discusses algorithmic ASCII art generation. The video would fit nicely into that one. Besides, there is the hand-made Star Wars Asciimation. --ZeroOne (talk | @) 13:58, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Ecch

There used to be a bunch of ASCII sites...what happened to the links? 69.81.50.252 21:25, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

http://artscene.textfiles.com/ should be in there. It's the most comprehensive collection of Text Art I know of. No BBS or other Website/FTP Server can match it, not even Scene.org. I will add it to the article. There are plenty of other great sites out there, but I have to agree with the editors that stated rightfully that this article was turning into a link farm which is not the purpose of Wikipedia. I think the other great sites are covered well enough by the Dmoz or other directories where this article links to. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 22:02, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Could someone please add the online text generators again?

I would add them myself, but I haven't had the chance to due to it being locked.

My just add links to on the bottom to eg www.asciify.org and www.text-image.com/convert/ like they were before they got removed.

I don't think so. Make sure to get them listed at http://dmoz.org/Arts/Visual_Arts/ASCII_Art/Software/. Wikipedia is not a Directory. If the software is noteworthy, create an article for it. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 18:49, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Verticon???

I was looking online for verticon and all i got was a company and wikipedia. Before I (or somebody else) deletes it, can anybody show proof that it is a legit term or show its use? thanks

Hazzayoungn 10:10, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

this is wikipedia, why not include an ascii wikipedia logo?

naturally, we'd have to spork it from uncyclopedia's ascii art page, which has an impressive example, in my opinion -SleweD

Firstly the wikimedia logos are non-free, secondly we are supposed to avoid self references where possible. Plugwash 01:08, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Merge from ASCII comic

Discussion at deletion review that led to the restore of the article ASCII comic suggested that article be moved here. Should it be? As the DRV closer, I have no opinion, but am creating a spot to discuss. GRBerry 13:37, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

I don't see any point in this. Xihr 01:04, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
A small paragraph would not hurt. It's another form of expression which seemed to have been quite popular considering the amount of art that was created. I would keep it brief, 1-2 of the most important references and the article will be okay and not become polluted. IMO. --roy<sac> Talk! .oOo. 12:23, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
