New Version: AN/SPQ-9B

[edit]

There is a newer version of this radar with a new antenna and software package. The new radar and old can pass information and be used by systems other than the Mk86 system.--Two way time (talk) 21:37, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This article is a starter class with obsolescing closed-architecure Eagis cruisers & destroyers (CRUDES) point of view. AN/SPQ-9B radar is replacing the radar-only part of the Mk-23 Target Acquisition System (TAS) and AN/SWY-2 Ship Defense Surface Missile System (SDSMS), and is part of the Capstone AAW capability and open-architecture Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) Mk 2 on nuclear aircraft carriers (CVN-68/77), amphibious ships (LHD-1/8, LHA-6, LPD-17/etc.). 144.183.224.2 (talk) 20:24, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not fitted to the Iowa class?

[edit]

The official YouTube channel for the Battleship New Jersey said that this system was not fitted to the battleship, rather fiberglass domes used for this system were used to protect control antennas for pioneer drones, leading the ship to externally appear to have these components. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMMGirdDwUU&t=643s Nameomcnameface (talk) 00:12, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see that the citation for the claim that the Iowas had the SPQ-9 was from a book by Norman Friedman. Friedman is an excellent researcher, but he tends to make assumptions and it is not surprising that for a minor (and obscure) thing like this he would get it wrong. I've edited the page accordingly.
