Car Registration History mention

[edit]

Shouldn't there be a mention in the text of the Car Registration service that the AA offer? Siralexf 10:18, 2 February 2007 (UTC)siralexf[reply]

Private company

[edit]

I've changed the first sentence to make it more obvious that The AA is a private company nowadays. Thomas Blomberg 09:56, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV?

[edit]

This article seems quite supportive of the AA. It campaigns heavily for motor road users, which obviously is a contentious issue. I've not got any references about this: Was expecting the wiki page to mention it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.215.24.170 (talk) 14:55, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I concur. Their attitude is that driving is the British way of getting round, and anything that is an obstacle should be opposed -road improvements are the only sensible investment in transport. This is why many other road user groups are anti-AA. As an example, consider their press release and analysis on congestion of july 6, 2009, which doesn't reach the conclusion that increased fuel costs can change people's behaviour. Instead it concludes the government should invest more in roads: http://www.theaa.com/public_affairs/reports/congestion-report.html
From the article, the AA's president Edmund King said "The motor vehicle is an integral part of British culture we rely on - whether getting to work, taking the kids to school or delivering goods.". The obvious implication that those of us who cycle to work or walk the kids to school are un-British. SteveLoughran (talk) 19:12, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is very supportive of The AA and not particularly neutral. Is it not a bit dubious the fact there is a link directly to the companies website, surely this falls under the section stating Wikipedia is an encyclopedia not an advertsing tool, meaning it should not allowed to be listed. Also why is it seen as having any noteabitliy compared to hundreds of other companies who are not allowed to be listed on Wikipedia, what makes The AA any different? I hope my views are taken into account. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Toh89 (talkcontribs) 14:36, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Advertisment

[edit]

The history section is tagged with an 'advertisement' tag. I have made some adjustments to the section to tone down some of the 'puff'. I would however like to point out that the court case mentioned in the section about the patrols obstructing the police in the course of their business and the organisation's subsequent coded messaging system is completely missing from the official company history. I will add some more balancing content and remove the banner unless anyone comes back with any further issues. PeterEastern (talk) 07:41, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have now removed the advertisement tag. PeterEastern (talk) 06:59, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The first sentence of paragraph 2 under "The private company" looks like a victim of careless editing:

In 2002 the AA Motoring Trust was to carry out their public interest motoring and road safety work following.

Following what?

If my guess is correct, this is what it means, and this version or something like it should be substituted in the article (changes bolded):

In 2002 the AA Motoring Trust was established to carry out the AA's public interest motoring and road safety work following the demutualisation.

--Thnidu (talk) 23:57, 25 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of editing since then, including in that section (now called De-mutualisation), but the sentence is still the same nonsense. I've made the change. --Thnidu (talk) 01:39, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Patrolman Pete doesn't meet notability criteria for its own article, and is likely to be deleted unless merged here. However, may make a relevant section here. Boleyn (talk) 10:52, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal from AA Cars

[edit]

AA Cars is a promotional article about a web site run by the Automobile Association. It probably doesn't deserve an article of its own, and its references are weak, but a brief mention in The Automobile Association would be appropriate. --John Nagle (talk) 18:01, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like there's already an AA Cars section in the article. So I'm going to "prod" the AA Cars article. --John Nagle (talk) 18:39, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, I think a merge would serve well in this instance. -- HighKing++ 21:55, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Somebody (not me) did it. Done. John Nagle (talk) 22:39, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Date Conflict

[edit]

The lede and the History section both say that the AA "was founded in 1905" yet the AA Badges section says "From 1901 until 1967 the AA distributed vehicle badges." which means that they were distributing them 4 years before they were formed. Can someone knowledgeable please either correct the relevant date or add an explanation for this apparent anomoly. Thanks Kiore (talk) 08:48, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

i'm sure AA has applied a new logo that is yellow with black inside instead of vice versa. --94.185.129.10 (talk) 09:00, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

AA member subscription

[edit]

The AA member subscription is in two parts to two different companies but collected as one payment. Can this be explained? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.111.159.232 (talk) 18:25, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Automobile Association → ? – Per WP:COMMONNAME, "The Automobile Association" is both inaccurate and not commonly used to refer to the company. The company is officially named AA plc and trades as The AA. Keeping it named this is akin to RAC Limited being "Royal Automobile Club" or Sainsbury's being "J Sainsbury" (though the latter is not completely inaccurate, and outdated names are sometimes still used as titles such as Macintosh, a brand named "Mac" since 1998). However, there isn't one easy name that this article could be moved to.

  • AA plc is an option, as it is a natural disambiguator and official name akin to Apple Inc.
  • The AA would be making a case of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC as it currently redirects to AA, and I'm not sure what WP:THE has to say about the use of this grammatical article.
  • AA (company) or The AA (company), simple parenthetical disambiguation is an option.

Or there is, of course, the current name that is inaccurate, but natural disambiguation. Lazz_R 18:52, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Insurance and other things

[edit]

Why is there no mention of things unrelated to vehicles in this article?

I'm clueless when it comes to money, cars, insurance, mortgages, bills etc as I've never lived on my own, I've never been abroad by myself, I haven't learnt to drive, and I have a simple bulding society card where you can't go below zero and have zero charges.

However after a quick look at the AA website it looks like they provide countless things unrelated to vehicles like:

  • Savings Accounts/ISA's
  • Mortgages
  • Credit Cards
  • Travel Currency Cards
  • Life Insurance
  • Pet Insurance
  • Will and Testaments
  • Home Insurance
  • Contents Insurance
  • Building Insurance
  • Holiday Home Insurance

And no doubt other stuff.

I could add the above things to the article, but I wouldn't be able to go into detail.

This article is not for merely listing the services offered by this organization. Wikipedia articles summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage say about an organization. If independent sources do not significantly discuss their other services, they can't be mentioned here. 331dot (talk) 09:54, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

AA plcThe AAWP:COMMONAME, WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Company is universally referred to as The AA, as evidenced by articles in The Guardian and Sky News, its domain name and its press releases. Mpliation (talk) 09:14, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
