Early text
[edit]I thought it might be a good idea to open up a talk about the issue of whether to call asteroid pages like this "951 Gaspra" or just "Gaspra." On the one hand, the version with the number is the technically accurate way of calling asteroids by name. But on the other, when people actually go looking for an asteroid in an encyclopedia, I suspect they just do a search for the name alone; catalogue number is one of the things I would expect the asteroid's entry to tell me, rather than be one of the things required to find/link to it.
Personally, my preference is to start off asteroid articles named after just their name, without the number, and if this name later conflicts with another article we should turn that page into a disambiguating page and use the number for the asteroid's article. See, for example, "Eros". Bryan Derksen
Sounds good to me. I really can't think of another use of the word "gaspra" that would be included in an encyclopedia. I will provide a redirect to this article from the proper name - this can be easily reversed if and when the naming issue comes up. -maveric149
Colouration
[edit]I wondered if anyone has any information on the interesting colours in the photograph. Is is a photographic phenomenon, or does the asteroid actually have that mottled colouration? CharlesC 14:23, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- The colors are exaggerated in this image; they're based on real but subtler variations. A good source for this kind of info is the website Views of the Solar System (www.solarviews.com) The Singing Badger 16:08, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- Great, thanks. CharlesC 22:00, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

951 Gaspra → 951 Haspra – per Wikipedia:Romanization of Ukrainian/National transliteration table 217.117.125.83 (talk) 13:43, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- oppose the name of the asteroid uses 'g' reliable sources. That said the town Gaspra should be moved—blindlynx (talk) 16:23, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose, per common name used in cited sources. Any discussion related to the town of Gaspra should be at Talk:Gaspra. 162 etc. (talk) 17:29, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- OPPOSE, STRONGLY (the proposed title for this page is literally incorrect for the asteroid). The name of the asteroid itself is 100% Gaspra, not Haspra. (See https://www.minorplanetcenter.net/db_search/show_object?utf8=%E2%9C%93&object_id=951). No matter how you decide to transliterate the name of the town, that doesn't change the name of the asteroid. Any sort of discussion about the name of the town itself should occur at Talk:Gaspra.
