Other Indian Armoured Divisions

[edit]

I was trying to trace details about other Indian Armoured Divisions but just about all I have found is the following; 32 Armoured Division was raised as 2 Armoured Division in 1940, redesignated 32 Armoured Division in 1942, disbanded in 1943 and merged with 43 Armoured Division to form 44 Armoured Division. This division had as its sign a white rhino on a red background.

43 Armoured Division was raised in 1942 and disbanded in 1943 to be merged with 44 Armoured Division. Its sign was a charging longhorn buffalo.

44 Armoured Division was raised in 1943, but disbanded in 1944. The divisional HQ fought as HQ 44 Airborne Division in the Northeast.

The 43rd armoured division commander was Frank Messervy

and the Indian Army did not convert old cavalry regiments to form the armoured component but created new regiments named the 45th Cavalry to the 48th Cavalry. 45/46 survived while the 47/48 were disbanded. The 45th went on to serve in the 50th Indian Tank Bde (there is also very litle known about this Bde). Jim Sweeney (talk) 08:33, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
