List of candidates

The list was published by the Ministry of Culture and Internal Affairs (under which the Electoral Commission sits) on 27 July 2024 on its official Facebook page (link). The Ministry does not otherwise have an online presence (mcia.gov.ki is still under construction, and the previous iteration (internalaffairs.gov.ki) has not been updated since 2021). No. A candidate must secure more than 50% of the ballots cast to be elected in the first round. If there are still vacancies after that a second round is held. The number of candidates for the 2nd round is the number of vacancies remaining plus 2, with any other candidates eliminated. Tawita2020 (talk) 02:12, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tawita2020: Thank you for the beginning of the second round results, and for all your work on this article. Out of curiosity: Do you know whether Teima Onorio withdrew between the two rounds in Arorae and endorsed one of her opponents? It seems odd that she got only seventeen votes if she actually maintained her candidacy. Is it a case of her endorsing one of the other candidates but having her name still on the ballot because there was no time to remove it? Aridd (talk) 13:04, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Aridd: I have no direct knowledge of what led to the significant drop in Teima's vote between the first and second rounds. It was clear from her poor showing in the first round that she had no chance of winning the second round, so it is entirely plausible that she encouraged her supporters to vote for Niiti instead. Borgenland: It's not clear why you consider that a reference is required for the turn-out percentages. It is a simple mathematical calculation using the data provided by sources that have been correctly cited. Tawita2020 (talk) 08:11, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You removed a reference stating turnout on the grounds of [1]. Unless you can provide the source stating that there was indeed a correction supporting the final number, I'm afraid I do have to treat this matter with a grain of salt. Borgenland: According to WP:V citation is only necessary where the matter is contentious. In what way is this contentious? As far as I am aware nobody is disputing these figures. They are readily calculable from the data referred to lower in the article (the sources for which are provided). If my maths is wrong I will happily revise the figures. I removed the reference that you had inserted because Radio New Zealand themselves issued a correction and stated that their own calculation of turn-out was incorrect - they removed the article that you had linked to. HapHaxion: The party affiliation of the incumbent candidates is known (by me, and others in Kiribati) but there is no online source for that information. All other candidates stand without declared party affiliation. Without an acceptable source it is impossible to provide the 'missing' information. Tawita2020 (talk) 05:09, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
