Displaying of player names
[edit]It has come to my attention that the displaying of player's names is being challenged. In my experience, when displaying goalscorers in a matchbox you would only show the last name of the player, however when it comes to countries like Korea or China it is necessary to show the entire name in order to distinguish players. For this tournament, this rule essentially applies to Myanmar and Korea DPR. All other countries should only show the last name and if necessary just the first initial then the last name should multiple players share the same last name. For example, please have a look at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, you may notice that the majority of the scorers shown in the matchbox only show the last name save for Korea Republic. Why you may ask, because in countries like these the last name comes first and the odds of having a shared last name are much higher so the full name must be displayed. If you'd like to comment, please do. Spartan008 (talk) 12:34, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- The method you describe is applied to many tournaments. The full name version is applied to others. Some points are to be noted. The first (which is less relevant) is that I personally think that just using last names shows a shocking lack of understanding about what wikipedia is - an encyclopedia, rather than a newspaper. Last names are fine is the information is to be consumed promptly, but this stuff is meant to be around for ages. Quite strangely, we are putting this information (full names) in the coding, and then effectively hiding it? Why? It can't be for space - very rarely does a name go on that long, and it actually tends to increase the amount of memory required. We also put referees full names in the match report - and that information is surely less important than the goalscorers (note also that full referees names is a fairly new change - previously they were does like the goalscorers here even in the early part of WC2010 qualification, but we went back and edited them - I was actually berated by one user for NOT USING full names LOL - so it's not like things can't evolve over time). Even worse, there is the issue of the stupidity of showing some full names within this apparent "rule". Why should Park Ji-Sung get a full name if he scorers against Australia, but (say) David Park of Australia scoring a goal against them gets just a last name. And if an Australian of Korean parentage scores a goal, is it "Kim Jong-Un" or "Kim". Additionally, the use of the initial to "distinguish" players with the same last name (Gary and Phil Neville say) depends on the coder knowing ALL THE POSSIBLE cases of confusion. You might claim that we can find this information by mousing over the name, by why hide relevant information - you could just as well claim we could find all the goal scorers by clicking on the match report link - so why show them at all. Other weird points apply, like the tedious edits over whether Giovanni Dos Santos is "Giovanni" or "Dos Santos" or the hugely amusing "is he Christiano Ronaldo" or just "Ronaldo" debates of 200- and whatever. Finally, and this is probably the only really salient point in all this, while I don't agree with the last name only convention, I don't apply my own rules to other pages (like say, WC quals, Asian Cup qualifiers etc) out of common courtesy to other editors who have set the rules. Apparently, some people don't see the need to follow that rule. Jlsa (talk) 03:26, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
