Magnitude

It seems there is a little uncertainty about the actual magnitude of this event. A lot of sources (including BBC and USGS) say it was 5.0 on the Richter scale, this is because the BGS revised the magnitude a month later from the initial 4.8. However, the BGS have since revised the magnitude to 4.7 [1] and other sources have failed to update their records, so it is known to many as being magnitude 5.0 (or 4.8). Considering the BGS was the main source of information to the BBC in the first place, i think 4.7ML is correct and should be used in the article. RapidR (talk) 10:29, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Without going into sources, 4.7 sounds about right and is probably generally-accepted. I was around 12 miles away from Rowley Regis when this hit. Proposed Deletion

I disagree with the deletion proposal because the UK is not an earthquake country as such, so such widely felt events are uncommon. This was the largest earthquake in the UK for 12 years at the time and was felt throughout England and Wales. In fact it is very similar to the conditions outlined in the discussion page of the 2003 Alabama earthquake, which was also proposed for deletion. Indeed, the quake may be "minor" in terms of worldwide seismicity, and may not have created a substantial amount of damage, however the occurrence of the event on its own in such a place as the UK is notable enough. Deletion? That's ridiculous. 4.7 is a sizeable quake and especially so for somewhere not used to them. After all, it was felt in France.
