Common Opponents Tiebreaker: Eagles and Rams
[edit]RE -- "Philadelphia was first NFC Wild Card ahead of L.A. Rams based on better record against common opponents (7–3 to Rams' 5–4)."
The common opponents were New Orleans, San Francisco, Phoenix Cardinals, Dallas, Chicago. N.Y. Giants and Minnesota.
Philadelphia played the teams as follows -- Dallas, Phoenix and N.Y. Giants twice each; New Orleans, San Francisco, Chicago and Minnesota once each (10 games).
The L.A. Rams played the teams as follows -- New Orleans and San Francisco twice each; Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago and Minnesota once each (9 games).
If winning percentages, instead of simple win-loss-tie, were used as a tie-break method, then the Eagles .700 mark would win out over the Rams' mark of .555
This does not need to be included on the main article page. It has been provided simply to explain the common opponents tiebreaker rule as it existed in 1989.
