[edit]"Division alignment in 1970 was largely intended to preserve the pre-merger setups, keeping traditional rivals in the same division. Plans were also made to add two expansion teams, but this would not take place until 1976, seven years after the merger." This makes no sense given the fact that the NFC alignment was randomly selected from a vase. there was 5 plans in the vase for the nfc the one selected was the ONLY one had Minnesota in the central and Dallas in the East, so it is hard to say the plans were designed to keep pre 1970 setups — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.116.191.43 (talk) 00:49, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
Division races
[edit]I'm curious what the asterisks indicate. I did a search for them in hopes of finding some indication, but only found the 21 instances... nothing explaining what they mean. DiamondKnight19 (talk) 11:17, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
- They apparently indicate that there was a tie in the standings, and that the team indicated was ahead on tie-breakers. Why it's done for some ties but not all, I don't know. Bmf 051 (talk) 02:39, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

– The seasons started in the fall and they go into next year. For example, in the current 2020 NFL season, the Super Bowl is not until 2021. Interstellarity (talk) 22:43, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. This has already been decided here. Jdavi333 (talk) 23:53, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
How about something like 2020 NFL regular season? This will clarify that the articles are about the regular season and not the whole season including the Super Bowl. Interstellarity (talk) 23:58, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. Notwithstanding the current consensus at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Football League#Naming conventions, all reliable sources covering the NFL historically have primarily used the single date format for the season. The alternative proposal to add "regular season" to the title is problematic because many of the articles provide summary style content for the playoffs (2013 NFL season#Postseason is one of the lengthy examples). Since there are no good alternatives, best to maintain the status quo. Zzyzx11 (talk) 00:06, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. The standard way of referring to NFL seasons is the current formatting. Rreagan007 (talk) 00:36, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose per above. This has already been decided on Wikiproject:NFL. Not to mention, it is much more common to refer to the season with a single year. For example a Google search of "2020 NFL season" has 11.8 million hits, [1]while "2020-21 NFL season" has less than 30,000 hits [2]. Frank AnchorTalk 02:06, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. The single-year convention has long-standing use and even extends beyond the seasons to individual teams with notable seasons. "72 Dolphins" returns over 600 million Google hits, and "85 Bears" has over 700 million. While "1972-73 Dolphins" has 153 thousand and "1985-86 Bears" has just under 600 thousand. --DB1729 (talk) 02:53, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
