Dr Prasanna Gunasena is a consultant neurosurgeon, politician and a member of the National People's Power. As a doctor, he is attached to Lanka Hospitals in Sri Lanka, also the Chairman of State Pharmaceutical Company (SPC) of Sri Lanka.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Gunasena was educated at Nalanda College Colombo. He holds MBBS, MS Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and also a Spinal Fellow (Canada).[3][4][5][6]
Career
[edit]He holds the honour of performing the surgery for cervical disc prolapse of the spine and replacement with functional discs for the first time in Sri Lanka.[citation needed] Gunasena is the first Sri Lankan Neurosurgeon to perform Balloon Kyphoplasty surgery for spinal code fractures.[7]
Gunasena was a founding member of the Neurosurgeons Association of Sri Lanka (NSASL).[citation needed]
Political career
[edit]Gunasena is an executive committee member of Kandy District for National People's Power.[8] He was contested in the 2024 Sri Lankan parliamentary election and elected to the parliament representing Kandy Electoral District.[9][10]
