Fair use rationale for Image:Bao Dai Time.jpg
[edit]Image:Bao Dai Time.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:26, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Han Tu help please.
[edit]I'm just beginning to do some small edits here and there on Vietnamese-related pages, as I do research for my dissertation on Japanese-Southeast Asian relations, and discover bits here and there. I'm afraid I know next to nothing about the Vietnamese language, and am having trouble finding or creating the Han Tu (kanji) I need sometimes to represent something. If anyone is familiar with Han Tu, please see my edits on Hoi An and replace the X's with the appropriate character. Pronounced "phố" and meaning something akin to "city", it looks like 广 + 甫 but is not something I can get to come up with my Japanese input. Thank you! LordAmeth 11:16, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
Redesign/renewal
[edit]It seems this portal hasn't seen a lot of updates lately—only four edits since December 2008, and the news articles date from September 2008. I'd like to play around with a new design for it, one that includes some auto-updating content that will help the portal appear a little more up-to-date, and perhaps mirroring the Vietnamese version in its overall layout, with perhaps a better overview of the topics involved. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements, and I'll try to incorporate them. --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 17:06, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Notice from the Portals WikiProject
[edit]WikiProject Portals is back!
The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.
As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.
There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.
Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.
And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.
From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 07:50, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Recognized content query
[edit]The list in the Recognized Content section of the portal page is a bit strange (e.g. see notes in Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Vietnam). Any thoughts on what should be done about it? Note: I've removed the list from this talk page. DexDor (talk) 18:59, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi DexDor: I have restored the list. If anything, the list should be used on this talk page, and then the list on the main portal page can be edited from the list on this talk page. Also note that the Recognized content list is often included on portal talk pages, in part to provide ideas for portal expansions. North America1000 19:40, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- DexDor: Per your concern at the recent MfD discussion:
- I edited the Portal:Vietnam/Recognized content page to remove automatic updating by User:JL-Bot (diff). I would like for the automatic updating to remain on this talk page, though, as per the above.
- I removed the Little Egret entry from the page (diff), per your concern at the recent MfD discussion.
- The JL-Bot may have false positives from time-to-time, or may display entries that are not strongly aligned with the topic of Vietnam. As such, similar entries at the Portal:Vietnam/Recognized content page can be pruned as needed. Since the auto-updating of the page is now essentially disabled, the bot won't repopulate such entries there.
- – North America1000 20:35, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- Update: I have removed more entries from Portal:Vietnam/Recognized content that are only tangentially related to the topic of Vietnam. See the page's Revision history for more information. Feel free to remove additional entries as needed. North America1000 21:39, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, that appears to be an improvement, but the list is still very US-biased (e.g. John McCain twice) and, of course, now it won't auto-update. It's not clear what purpose a list like this has for either readers or editors; both would probably be better off referring to a list of top-importance articles etc (with the readers looking for important articles that are high quality and the editors looking for important articles that are low quality to be improved or that are high quality to go on the portal). However, that report isn't really suitable for readers.
- Re "JL-Bot may have false positives"; presumably it's working correctly (identifying articles that have been tagged for the wikiproject and are FA/GA etc), it's just that so many articles have been tagged for the project (mostly as mid/low-importance) and that these are included in the bot results (can that be changed?). Selected articles
[edit]The following articles are presently being displayed in the portal using transclusion from articles. Consensus at VPP has approved using transclusion templates in portals, which provides users with up-to-date content that is verbatim to that in articles. The “did you know?” section is awful
[edit]So far we've got an American shopping centre controversy, an American bus company assassination plot, a white American nurse, an Australian communist, Japanese leftists, an American anti-war publication found on American ships, a monument in Moscow...
I am I the only one noticing a pattern here? It's almost like whoever curated the selection made an effort to exclude all but the most tangentially related facts about Vietnam. This portal is about Vietnam, not about the US or Australia or wherever else, let's make the “did you know?” section appropriate for the topic. After all, wiki Portal: China and wiki Portal: US all have information relating directly to their respective countries and the happenings within their borders.
