Articles for portal

[edit]

I'm in the process of putting together a list of articles which all the portals relevant to Christianity could use in selecting articles for their portal at User:John Carter/Christianity portals. As you can see, I'm still in the kind of early stages with it, but hope to be finished with it in a few days or so. Alphabetically and chronologically, Vatican City appears last, so it will probably be later in the week that I get to it, but I do hope to get there comparatively soon. Having said all that, however, I cannot see how, with the comparatively limited scope of the portal, and the fact that all of its content could already be fit into the Portal:Catholicism or Portal:Pope, this portal presents the pressing need for this portal its creator speaks about above is. Could someone explain to me what they see the need for this portal as being? Thank you. John Carter (talk) 20:36, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Panorama?

[edit]

Any panoramas I could use to add to the portal? I noticed Portal:United States has one. -download ׀ sign! 21:21, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed the random image generating of the panorama. Thanks. -download ׀ sign! 21:40, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Download, its me. Just to say, theres a few panoramas here on Wikimedia Commons that you can probably use. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 10:04, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What is the apparent need for this portal?

[edit]

Everything that this portal would deal with could already be included Portal:Catholicism or Portal:Pope. What is the apparent need for this portal? John Carter (talk) 21:47, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well every other country does have a portal; and I think we have enough articles on the subject to make it worth having one. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 09:59, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it isn't true that every country has portals, several still do not, and this includes several countries much larger than the Vatican. Also, there is the requirement of not only having enough articles, but having anyone who would actually use the portal as a portal. Given the rather limited scope of this subject, I have some doubts myself. In any event, I certainly do not see any need for having separate portals for the papacy and the Vatican. Personally, I think the best option would be to move the Pope portal to some other name, like Portal:Vatican or maybe Portal:Vatican City, and try to improve the single portal for the subject rather than having two. John Carter (talk) 13:29, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed rename of Portal:Pope

[edit]

I have proposed that the existing Portal:Pope be retitled Portal:Vatican. This is done with the intention of using the existing material of that portal as the basis for this portal, and to reduce the number of basically redundant portals, such as having separate portals for the papacy and the Vatican. Any interested parties should feel free to express their opinions there. Thank you. John Carter (talk) 13:26, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you think doing things that way will work then go ahead. We guest need to make it as good as possible and hopefully get it to featured status. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 13:48, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. These could probably be merged; I could help with that. -download ׀ sign! 22:25, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiNews

[edit]

Why don't you instead of like having a subpage of this portal for the In the News section as Portal:Vatican City/News why not change it into WikiNews? To be able to use the WikiNews Importer to get News About the Vatican City which you can find out how to do it here.

Christianity portals

[edit]

I am currently trying to get together some lists of articles relevant to each Christianity-related portal which could be used, at least potentially, to help bring all the extant portals up to Featured Portal status. The current, admittedly incomplete, list of articles, images, etc., relevant to each portal can be found at User:John Carter/Christianity portals. I also think that, at least in theory, we would probably best use a single article only in a single portal, and that we probably have enough articles to do that, although there might be a few exceptions. I would welcome input from anyone on the associated talk page regarding which articles and other materials they would like to see associated with which portal(s), any suggestions for additional portals or changes to existing portals, etc. Thank you. How do I edit

[edit]

How do I edit the portal? Oct13 (talk) 22:41, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How's this for a plan: choose the first "selected article" and post its name here, and I'll do the fiddly formatting. Then I'll post back here with a detailed description of what I did, so that you'll be able to add more selected articles and perhaps attempt another of the boxes yourself. But I'm away this weekend, so this won't happen immediately. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:17, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Done
-- John of Reading (talk) 09:08, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok! Article 1 is for the Secret Vatican Archive. Oct13 (talk) 18:58, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I made 10 articles, and changed the number to 10. Oct13 (talk) 19:21, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All articles are made! Oct13 (talk) 23:38, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well done! If you want more slots, edit Portal:Vatican City/Selected article and replace {{25 Numbered subpages}} with {{Numbered subpages}}. But how about tackling the "Selected picture" or "Selected quote" box next? Again, if you'd like to post the first picture or quote here I could begin the formatting. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:05, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Selected pictures sounds fine. Let's start with Vatican._Galery_IMG_4451.jpg Oct13 (talk) 18:02, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Selected pictures

[edit]

I've created the framework for some selected pictures and have done the first one. One gotcha is that I copied the layout from Portal:Society/Featured picture/Layout, and, although it says it has a "caption" parameter it doesn't actually get displayed. Instead, use the "text" parameter and grab a sentence or so from a relevant article. There's no need to find 25 pictures, I think. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:35, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Oct13 (talk) 03:21, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Added nine photos. Oct13 (talk) 03:55, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Vatican/Holy See?

[edit]

Vatican City was established in the 20th century, as part of the Holy See. The Holy See currently lacks a portal. What about changing this portal to embrace all content relating to the Holy See, for the time being? Chicbyaccident (talk) 11:42, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. Maybe it should be called "Vatican" since "The Vatican" is sorta a catch-all term for the Holy See, both as a sovereign subject and as the See of Peter, and Vatican City State? Canon Law Junkie §§§ Talk 05:57, 25 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notice from the Portals WikiProject

[edit]

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.
