Portal

[edit]
  • Good start. Anything I can do to help? Maybe think up some do you knows? Sabine's Sunbird talk 03:23, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Can I suggest that there be a link to the dino portal, since there is a certain amount of overlap between the two, and what are we going to have, selected species or selected biography? Also, I think a topcs section would be good, it could have links to all the families and orders as well as many of the more obscure articles not in the template footer. Sabine's Sunbird talk 00:44, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Because of personal reasons, I will not be able to update the portal until tomorrow. I have edited the portal so that it displays last week's information. If you would like to update tonight, feel free do to so, but be careful. Remember that this version of the portal is not correct: {{CURRENTWEEK}} is consistently replaced with 34. --Birdman1 talk/contribs 00:27, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since, unfortunately, there is little featured content to display in the portal, I have decided to update the portal next week with new information. --Birdman1 talk/contribs 21:30, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do not fear: The portal will be updated tomorrow on Tuesday Wednesday. (Unless you do it tonight.) --Birdman1 talk/contribs 04:40, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are simply not enough high-quality pages for this portal to display on a weekly basis. Therefore, starting this weekend, this portal's content will be randomized. I will add new featured articles to the stock from which the random-content-displayer draws. See Portal:Cats for an idea of what I mean to do. Until I implement these changes (this weekend), the portal will stay as it is. The changes will practically eliminate the need for maintenance. --Birdman1 talk/contribs 16:07, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Info

[edit]

I dont kwno if im posting on the correct place. i just wanted to add info into the "Momotus momota" article of wikipedia. the bird (Momotus momota) is the national bird of Nicaragua, that bird is like a patriotic simbol for us. probably adding that info to the page will give more importance to the article. Thank you

Actually it's Eumomota superciliosa, or the Turquoise-browed Motmot, that's the national bird of Nicaragua, (rather than the Blue-crowned Motmot, Momotus momota) and that information is already included in the article. Thanks for checking! MeegsC | Talk 13:51, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Portal:Amphibians and Reptiles, Portal:Animals and Portal:Fish are all related. Perhaps some of the less related ones could be removed to make space if need be. Richard001 (talk) 05:09, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bird article name (capitalisation)

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Crowned Crane about the title of four articles. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. Mama meta modal (talk) 15:27, 23 February 2014 (UTC).[reply]

Request for comments

[edit]

There is now also an ongoing request for comments on the same subject: Talk:Crowned Crane#Request for comments.

Do not hesitate to come and comment on this question. Mama meta modal (talk) 08:53, 16 March 2014 (UTC).[reply]

Consensus

[edit]

The discussion was closed (and the pages moved) on 26 March 2014, see Talk:Crowned crane#Requested move for details.

New discussion

[edit]

The important discussion started on Talk:Crowned crane and Wikipedia:Move review/Log/2014 March#Black crowned crane now moved to Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#A new proposal regarding bird article names.

Mama meta modal (talk) 21:02, 9 April 2014 (UTC).[reply]

The consensus is now clear. The relevant pages will soon be checked and made consistent with Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#Bird common name decapitalisation.

Implement on this portal

[edit]

Would there be any objection if I begin implementing the changes discussed above on this portal? That is, I would begin making species common names in the portal comply with MOS:LIFE. Thank you. SchreiberBike talk 16:51, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea! It would be a shame to have the portal out of step with the articles. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:03, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done, as far as I can tell. If I've missed anything, please let me know. SchreiberBike talk 04:58, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bird identification

[edit]

I'm not knowledgeable about birds, but occasionally take a picture when the opportunity arises. Can someone identify this species? Thanks.

File:BirdSpeciesUnknown.jpg

I'll then have the file name, description and category changed appropriately. Thanks! DonFB (talk) 10:58, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @DonFB:. Where was this picture taken, and when? It's helpful to know, as there are a few similar species in various parts of the world... I'm guessing, from your profile info, that it was somewhere in the US within the past few days. If so, it's an adult snowy egret. MeegsC (talk) 15:14, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @DonFB:, I agree with MeegsC. Although Little egret increasingly occurs in the US, this is definitely snowy, different plumes, lores and iris characteristics Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:11, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replies. Will add/change info accordingly. DonFB (talk) 02:59, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Useful information

[edit]

Here's a somewhat outdated list of recognized content that might warrant display on the portal. Abyssal (talk) 17:33, 12 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've setup WP:RECOG at the subpage Portal:Birds/Recognized content. —andrybak (talk) 12:04, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced quotations

[edit]

It's not appropriate to show quotations without a source. Please remove unsourced quotations or hide the box entirely. Sourced quotations can generally be found on Wikiquote. q:Birds appears to have more than enough to choose from (not the supposed Gore Vidal quotation I see now), but if you need more then feel free to add them there, maybe the quotation you're looking for is already on its author's page. Nemo 08:34, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And I added sources for the remaining three. MeegsC (talk) 23:01, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
