• 1856 - The 1856 Last Island hurricane made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane, obliterating Last Island (a.k.a. Isle Dernière). At least 200 people were killed.
• 1987 - Typhoon Betty (track pictured) reaches peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 260 km/h (160 mph) with a pressure of 890 hPa while making landfall over northern Samar.
