Queen Elizabeth I of England painted c.1575 by an unknown artist. Her life and loves were explored in three operas by Gaetano Donizetti – Il castello di Kenilworth, Maria Stuarda, and Roberto Devereux. She is also the subject of Rossini's Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra and Benjamin Britten's Gloriana, which was composed for the coronation of her descendant, Queen Elizabeth II.
