Can we stop the hyperlink?

I have discovered that a number of people click on the map, expecting to see a larger image complete with the red dot, instead they just get the map image. I was just wondering if there was a way to stop the template hyperlinking to the map png. Just a thought! MortimerCat 18:34, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Mozilla v. IE

Look at these images in Mozilla and in Internet Explorer. On my screen, this template works fine in Mozilla but shifts the dots downwards on IE, off the map. Is it just me? --maclean 06:46, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Space below the picture

New York image

Does anyone else think that the New York image (at {{Location map New York}}) might be specified slightly wrong? The pushpin of Geneseo, New York looks slightly too high (Northerly) to me. --bdesham ★ 05:56, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Redundant marker

17-September-2007: I am setting the default "mark=" image file for the pointer as the (redundant) copy, Image:Red_pog2.svg ( identical to the original pointer), to bypass the ongoing image-cache problems during September 15-17, 2007. Only the original red-dot image (Image:Red_pog.svg) has been disappearing at size 8x8 pixels: the blue dot (Image:Blue_pog.svg) has been reliable when sized 8x8 pixels. -Wikid77 11:32, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

If seconds fields are present but empty--it breaks the map

If |lat_sec or |lon_sec are present but not filled in it breaks the map. Compare this map with the map on the Pag example on the template. Can anyone more familiar with this template fix this? —MJCdetroit 17:11, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

The problem seemed to be there because lon_sec and lat_sec were not conditional within an #expr. Therefore, I made them conditional and as shown in the map to the right everything seems good. —MJCdetroit 19:55, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Inset maps

Would it be possible to specify the coordinates for an inset map in the Location Map template? E.g. for {{Location map Portugal}} there are inset maps of the Azores and Madeira. It seems that the editor could specify the pixel and geographic coordinate locations of each inset map and then place the markers correctly on the inset map. Thoughts? I think it would probably be a lot easier (but not better!). ;-) I don't know how to do it, in any case, but how would your suggestion work with a map like that shown on Portuguese Liga 2007-08. Usability Problem - clicking on Map

Hi there, Usually location maps using this template seem to be thumbnail size, so the size of the marker can obliterate detail (As an example, for many articles on towns in Northland, New Zealand it is impossible to tell which coast the town is on. Therefore I often click on a location map to see an enlargement, only to be disappointed as only the background map is displayed, even if it is in SVG format.

Could this template be amended so that a replacement link is injected around the image? A link which contains the coordinates and the background image as parameters so that the special page called can do the same trick that the template has done, only at a larger scale. Even if it uses an onclick attribute to override the standard link, that should work for most users. dramatic (talk) 03:06, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

For an example of a town article with this problem, see Houhora. I considered using a location map of just Northland, not the whole North Island, but the main aim of the location map is to give people an approximate idea of where this town is, and to do that they must be able to recognise other features on the map. Most people who would recognise a map of New Zealand will recognise the North Island (not that I have any evidence for that), but significantly less would recognise a map of just Northland.

I tried using a smaller dot, but it doesn't help enough.

A solution along the lines of dramatic's suggestion would be helpful. I'd like any solution to also work with the multiple dot versions of the template.-gadfium 04:29, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Here's some ideas:

• Link to a special page that shows a big version of the map. Not a bad idea, but not likely to happen. The developers are not going to bother for something that specific.
• Link to the existing page for geographic data (the one you get when you click on coordinates). Easy to do, but gives you a page of links when you expect to see a map.
• Pop up the miniatlas. Relatively easy to do with some messing with site javascript.
• Link to a page which contains the large version of a map (in portal namespace, probably), and the marker and label displayed. Also relatively easy to do with some javascript.

Miniatlas probably has the best bother/advantage ratio, especially if we can get it to display maps at right zoom levels. OTOH, I do like the idea of a portal of maps connected with this template. Zocky | picture popups 15:45, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

I've found the documentation at m:WikiMiniAtlas, it is free software, and it's already implemented on en.wikipedia. In the article, you need to click on the little globe icon next to the coordinates, not on the coordinates themselves or on the location map. This gives a zoomable map, although unfortunately it doesn't appear to take note of the scale parameter to the coord template. If clicking on the location map could bring up this, with an appropriate zoom level, that would be fantastic. How can we move this forward?-gadfium 19:44, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

That looks great Gadfium. Unfortunately the map which pops up when you click the globe seems to have a lower z-index than the wikipedia logo, so clicking on the zoom buttons takes me to the main page! (Might not happen if you have a large monitor browser window dramatic (talk) 23:19, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

That problem arises if the map overlaps the left-hand links bar. I just tried at 800x600 resolution, and it was just out of that area - presumably the implementer of the feature allowed for that resolution. For a smaller screen or narrower browser width, then yes there would be the problem you describe.-gadfium 06:13, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

You've got a point. Niue does however have, apparently, about 17 settlements as per here. Tokelau has significantly fewer locations, though, as per here, and it might be less than productive. However, a few editors, me included (or maybe primarily, other than User:Blofeld of SPECTRE), are going to be trying to add many of the settlements from most parts of the world to wikipedia in some form or another, and maps would definitely help. Template naming conventions for subdivisions of a country

I propose that all location map templates for each subdivision in a country follow a naming convention so that they are all grouped together rather than being scattered across the entire A-Z range. For example for states in the USA: {{Location map Alaska}} becomes {{Location map USA Alaska}}, {{Location map New York}} becomes {{Location map USA New York}}. Or for Canada, {{Location map British Columbia}} becomes {{Location map Canada British Columbia}} and {{Location map Ontario}} becomes {{Location map Canada Ontario}}. Bulgaria map problems

I'm having real problems with Template:Location map Bulgaria. (If you go there, you find a page where, as I understand it from looking at others, there should actually be a map. But instead, the page is essentially blank, and merely refers you to Template:Location map.

Just now, in composing this, I did look into the code on the edit page for Location map Bulgaria - and was rather surprised at what I found there! - apparently this is why an image actually does come up. However, there's still a problem, as far as I can see. Please have a look at User:Martha_Forsyth/Mom's_Code-samples#Locating_places_on_a_map for an illustration. The positioning does not work correctly when I use template:location map, but apparently when using template:infobox settlement, it does. Since the map that comes up in the two instances looks fundamentally the same, I'm suspecting that the problem may lie in the coordinates specified by the two templates, but understanding and fixing this is quite beyond me - I seem to be lost in a maze of templates and perhaps interlocking templates. I think you might have misunderstood my request? The discussion you refer to above was about zooming in when the map is clicked. I'm suggesting that the hyperlinks for the red dots on the map use the underlying GPS co-ordinates of that point to redirect you to geohack, as happens when you click on a {{coord}} link. It's definitely better, thanks. Although it might be even better by leaving things like roads and built up areas and just removing the labels on the land. Labels on the sea area will probably be best to leave in (Harbour, Bay, coves, etc). Other things I can think of particular importance, apart from those already mentioned are:

• Leaving the locator map in the top left hand corner.
• Labelling of the summit.
• Maybe adding a modified key.
