Monobook-specific?

[edit]

It looks as though these gadgets only work with the monobook skin (at least, I see no effect unless I change to using monobook rather than classic). Shouldn't the message say that these are monobook-specific, or give a link to instructions for other skins?-gadfium 19:06, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Centralized discussion

[edit]

Where is the documentation for the Gadgets feature? I think a lot of people are interested in the meta:Help:User style/floating quickbar (which could be updated...) — Omegatron 01:16, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"You take full responsibility for any action performed" warning

[edit]

I added the basic "You take full responsibility for any action performed" warning that is posted on WP:FRIENDLY and WP:TWINKLE here since users might enable these tools without reading any of those two pages. I also decided to post it here because it also applies to those who enable WP:POP too (specifically the one-click revert feature and option to fix links to bypass redirects and disambiguation pages), so it would not make sense to post the warning on each of the individual relative system messages listed on Special:Gadgets. block warning

[edit]

Wikipedia needs to be as friendly as possible to newcomers and this only makes us look hostile. The whole warning is useless and it would be better to remove it all, but if not will someone at least get rid of the block warning? Pzrmd (talk) 08:00, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The explanation why I initially copied and pasted the basic warning message from WP:FRIEND and WP:TWINKLE has been posted above. The link to WP:BLOCK is there because basically it is also was copied and pasted from the warning messages on WP:FRIEND and WP:TWINKLE too. I disagree that it "only makes us look hostile" when the misuse of editing tools like WP:FRIEND, WP:TWINKLE and the features of WP:POP have the potential to cause massive vandalism on or damage to hundreds of pages – which several of both vandalism and well-intentioned accounts have been blocked for in the past. Cheers. Zzyzx11 (talk) 10:08, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The warning alone is sufficient. A threat to block isn't going to add anything useful to the message. Pzrmd (talk) 12:47, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's rather doubtful that new users are going to use any gadgets, and it requires at least a superficial knowledge of their features to misuse Twinkle or Popups disruptively on a large number of articles before you can be stopped. If anyone wants to use these tools, they need to be aware of our blocking policy and have an understanding that they will be held accountable, with whatever repercussions may be warranted, if they misuse the tools. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 10:40, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's ok with me if we leave the warning. I just don't like the block threat. Pzrmd (talk) 11:23, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CSS-based gadgets don't require js

[edit]

Since we have some CSS-based gadgets, the thing is technically inaccurate, so to avoid an inevitable angry mob when someone turns off their js and realised that a gadget is still functioning, we should probably update the thing to reflect that possibility - basically change 'These gadgets require JavaScript to be enabled in your browser.' to 'Most of these gadgets require JavaScript to be enabled in your browser.'

Because this is so important. -— Isarra 02:44, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done Because you asked so nicely. Rjd0060 (talk) 05:57, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. -— Isarra 16:52, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I suggest adding: "See Wikipedia:User scripts for lots of other scripts."

It might add that they require an edit to install, are often less tested and haven't been vetted by administrators, but I prefer the short version. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:35, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please add this line, to the end of the existing text:

The numbers of users for each gadget on this wiki is listed at Gadget usage statistics.

(This will match mw:MediaWiki:Gadgets-prefstext et al, and provide easy access to the stats.) Thanks! Quiddity (talk) 20:11, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, “Number of users are” vs “Numbers of users are”

Grammar fixes

[edit]

There is one grammatical error remaining in the blurb at the top of the Gadgets preferences page. The 4th sentence currently reads as

Some options only be available for certain skins.

which is very clearly missing the word 'may' between the words 'options' and 'only'.

Browk2512 (talk) 17:54, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Done changed to "are only" as they are actually enforced. — xaosflux Talk 18:12, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please add "Note that these gadgets will have no effect on this preferences page." after the 3rd sentence. This statement is included in the software default message, and is useful in context of a few gadgets like dark mode or blackskin whose effects a user may expect to see immediately. – SD0001 (talk) 16:23, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done-ish, made a few tweaks, including making that point known. — xaosflux Talk 16:30, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A little whitespace please

[edit]

A small thing, but the codes added to the descriptions of individual gadgets would be better with a following space. i.e. change (E)(U)GoogleTrans: open a translation popup ... to (E) (U) GoogleTrans: open a translation popup ... etc. — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 11:50, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note, easiest way to get to these is via Special:Gadgets, each line will need an "edit description". — xaosflux Talk 13:23, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
