Purpose
[edit]This article was created to assist editors, both new and experienced, in entering special characters in Wikipedia articles. Several basic methods are discussed, beginning with the largely undocumented special-character links provided by the MediaWiki software. No attempt has been made to cover every available method; the objective was to give editors enough information to perform the task without intimidating them with large amounts of unrelated material. The effort was initiated by Art LaPella and was discussed fairly thoroughly in Help talk:Special characters. Several companion changes were made to that article, the most significant being links to this article for editors who simply want to know how to enter special characters. Need instructions on how to insert special characters on IOS
[edit]I'm not talking about common combined characters like é, for which a menu appears when holding your finger on the key. I need a combining grave accent and dieresis for the article tilde. They're not in any of the special character links at the bottom of my WP edit screens. The accents get confused sometimes with single quotation marks and curly quotation marks (pre-Unicode). deisenbe (talk) 10:48, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
Second Linux example clearly wrong
[edit]The instructions "Hold Ctrl+⇧ Shift+U and type up to eight hex digits, then release Ctrl+⇧ Shift+U." are clearly wrong, since the U key is not a modifier like Shift and Ctrl but an entry key, and therefore cannot be held down during other keystrokes. Need information on templates for entering special chararacters
[edit]There are characters that have syntactical significance in wikitext, and there are templates for entering some of them. Help:Entering special characters does not list them, and adding a section with such a list would be helpful. Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 13:35, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
Named character entities are not just ASCII
[edit]Help:Entering special characters#Problems with HTML references begins Because a character reference uses only ASCII characters
. However, such references as ¢ are not ASCII. Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 13:42, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- The characters in "¢" are all ASCII. "¢" is not a character reference. Peter Brown (talk) 17:50, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
Something got broken?
[edit]In the dropdown "Special characters" box, Arabic used to include the unicode items used for transcribing Arabic, particularly ʾ and ʿ. They're now missing both from the Arabic and Arabic Extended fields and from the Symbols section. Restore it them one place or the other. Same basic symbol is used for the Hawaiʿian ʿokina, although it might be somewhat distinct. — LlywelynII 19:57, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
