Zejnulla Fazliu (born August 28, 1955, in Kondovo, Skopje, then part of Yugoslavia) is an Albanian Islamic theologian and religious leader who has played a notable role in the Islamic Religious Community of North Macedonia. Known for his contributions to religious leadership, conflict resolution, and advocacy for transparency within the Islamic Religious Community (IRC), Fazliu has been a prominent figure in addressing corruption and promoting peace during periods of political and social turmoil in the region.
Early Life and Education
Fazliu pursued his education in Islamic theology at the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. His studies provided him with a strong foundation in religious leadership, preparing him for his role in the Islamic Religious Community of Macedonia, where he became an influential cleric and advocate for autonomy within the institution.
Advocacy for the Autonomy of the Islamic Religious Community
During the 1990s and early 2000s, Fazliu, alongside colleagues such as Idris Selami and Rexhepi Jusufi, opposed what they perceived as the undue influence of external elements—including secret services and criminal structures—within the Islamic Religious Community. This group of clerics actively worked to protect the independence of the IRC, resisting efforts to politicize or criminalize the institution. Fazliu’s efforts included public advocacy, calls for transparency, and appeals to authorities to address corruption and misconduct.
Role During the 2001 Armed Conflict
In the 2001 armed conflict in Macedonia, Fazliu played a key role in preventing the escalation of violence into religious divisions. Collaborating with international actors, including representatives of Western embassies and the OSCE, Fazliu worked to keep religious communities uninvolved in the conflict. His diplomatic efforts were instrumental in maintaining the social cohesion of Macedonia during this volatile period.
The Kondovo Case
One of Fazliu’s most notable contributions was his involvement in resolving the Kondova case, a critical incident in which armed groups gathered in the village of Kondovo, threatening to destabilize Skopje. Fazliu facilitated a dialogue between the heads of Macedonia’s main political parties, proposing a meeting in Kondovo to address the crisis. His mediation helped resolve the situation peacefully, avoiding bloodshed and protecting the civilian population of the village. This effort was documented in reports by international organizations, highlighting Fazliu’s role as a mediator.
Anti-Corruption Efforts within the Islamic Religious Community
In 2004, Fazliu and other religious leaders began advocating for reforms within the IRC, raising concerns about alleged criminal activities and corruption. He called attention to the installation of leaders within the IRC through coercion and the misuse of community funds and waqf properties. In 2017, Fazliu formally appealed to Macedonia’s Special State Prosecutor to investigate these allegations, seeking accountability for those involved in the alleged criminalization of the institution.
Legacy
Zejnulla Fazliu is recognized for his commitment to justice, peace, and the integrity of the Islamic Religious Community. His efforts to promote transparency, mediate conflicts, and protect the autonomy of the IRC have had a lasting impact on the religious and social landscape of North Macedonia. His work is seen as a testament to the role of religious leaders in fostering dialogue and stability in times of political and social challenges.
