Warrant is the debut studio EP by American band Dog Eat Dog, released in july 13, 1993 by Roadrunner Records. The album title is a lighthearted jab at the band Warrant for releasing an album titled Dog Eat Dog a year before.

Background and development

[edit]

Dog Eat Dog was formed in 1990 by bassist Dave Neabore and guitarist Sean Kilkenny after leaving the hardcore band Mucky Pup. Soon after, Mucky Pup crew member John Connor joined on vocals. Connor had already been a vocalist for several local bands and together, the trio wrote songs like "Funnel King", "Strip Song", and "Psychorama". After a long search, the band also found a drummer known simply as Brett. After several rehearsals, they held their first "official" performance in Neabore's basement on April 1, 1990. The band packed fifty people into Neabore's basement and held a toga party. Kevin Reilly, a band friend, was invited to perform with the band on saxophone. After that they invited the Mucky Pup guitarist Dan Nastasi to join the band and after some rehearsals he joins. The band decided to record a 5 song demo. After the success of the demo, in 1992, they released a another demo featuring their new drummer, Mark Mari. With those demo tapes out, they became really popular in the local scene. They also became friends with the Biohazard guitarist Billy Graziadei who gave their second demo tape to a Roadrunner Records representative while touring Europe. When the tape was sent to Roadrunner, the label representatives attended several Dog Eat Dog shows and decided to offer them a record deal. The band accepted but Mark Mari decided to leave the band, so they had to find a replacement. Luckily the spot was taken by Dave Maltby and the band. The band also invited Scott Mueller to play on saxophone and he accepted.[1]

Recording and production

[edit]

The EP was recorded and mixed at Nevessa Production in Woodstock, New York.[2] Alongside the band, the record features a vocal appearence from Doug Wilson who recorded vocals for the song "... In The Dog House". For some reason, despite being in the band, Scott Mueller is credited as a additional musician.

The EP was produced, mixed and engineered by Chris Andersen.[3] The EP was also produced by the bands guitarist Dan Nastasi and the band itself.[3] Doug Wilson also produced and mixed the Dog Pound Remix of the song "... In The Dog House" while Dave Maltby co-produced it.

The front cover was designed by Andy Howell.

Release

Touring

[edit]

The band in beginning performed on the East Coast of the United States, but were soon offered a European tour by Roadrunner. Their first European tour saw them opening for Bad Brains who were a big influence on the band, as well as opening for the hip-hop trio The Goats. [1] Bad Brains also teached the band about touring overseas and what to do and what not.[1]
