Vojislav Topalović (Serbian Cyrillic:Војислав Топаловић; 7 October 1942 14 March 2018) was a Bosnian Serb politician, who served as president[1] (19911998) of the municipality Rudo. In May 1996, he was awarded the Order of Njegoš (1st class) for his contribution in the creation of Republika Srpska.

Biography

[edit]

Topalović was born in the town of Rudo. After finishing his studies at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Sarajevo, he returned to his hometown and worked as an educator. He would then go on to work as an advisor in the presidency of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At the beginning of the Yugoslav Wars, he was appointed as the president of Rudo by Radovan Karadžić, and he also joined the Serb Democratic Party. In 1992, the municipality of Rudo sold a bronze statue[2] of Josip Broz Tito for 4000 Deutsche Mark, because it was unable to pay its workers due to Hyperinflation in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which sparked some controversy.

In the summer of 1997, Karadžić appointed him to be the Minister of Religion of Republika Srpska. He stayed in that position until January 1998, when Milorad Dodik came to power. He then became the president of the Serbian Cultural-Educational Society "Prosvjeta".

EUFOR Raid[3]

[edit]

On May 7 2009, about 30 troops from the European Union peacekeeping force in Bosnia and Herzegovina raided Vojislav's home in Rudo, as ordered by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, which had suspected that Vojislav knew the location of the fugitive Radovan Karadžić. The EUFOR forces confiscated 2 unlicensed weapons, including a Škorpion, a computer, mobile phones, and books.

The local government and police later stated that they were not notified about the raid beforehand.
