Varanashi Subraya Bhat (June 8, 1927 - 2013) was the founder of CAMPCO, who made significant contributions to agricultural cooperation, marketing, and rural development, particularly in the arecanut and cocoa sectors of Karnataka and Kerala.[1][2]. As the Founder Secretary of Adyanadka Education Society, he also demonstrated his dedication to educational advancement.
Early life and education
[edit]He was born near Adyanadka Village, Karnataka into an agricultural family. He was born to Thirumaleshwari Amma and Varanashi Krishnayya who had settled in Moodambailu.[3]
Career
[edit]Bhat's influence in agricultural marketing and cooperation began with his election to the Board of Management of South Kanara Agriculturists Co-operative Marketing Society in 1967, where he later served as President from 1973 to 1977. He also contributed his expertise as a Member of the Karnataka State Agricultural Marketing Board from 1972 to 1975.
He established the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Co-operative Society (CAMPCO) in response to a severe price crisis affecting arecanut farmers between 1970 and 1973[4][5]. Under his leadership as President from 1973 to 1990, CAMPCO successfully stabilized arecanut market prices and became one of India's leading cooperative institutions. In 1986, he established a modern chocolate factory in Puttur to provide a stable market for cocoa producers[6].
Bhat was the president of the All India Arecanut and Cocoa Growers' Association, chairman of the Cocoa and Arecanut Development Committee under the Ministry of Agriculture, and member of the Western Ghat Development Committee under the Ministry of Planning.
He contributed to village infrastructure (roads, culverts, bridges) and founded Adyanadka Education Society as secretary.
In 2002 he received the Sahakara Ratna from the Government of Karnataka, and in 2005 he received the Sahakarita Ratna from the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO).[7][8]
