The Tygron Platform is a Cloud computing platform[4] developed and maintained by Tygron in The Netherlands, starting in the tech incubator program of the Delft University in 2005.[5] It can integrate various geospatial data sources[6] into a single data model, run environmental simulation models using General-purpose computing on graphics processing units[7] and present the results in a 3D visualization for analysis.[8]

The Tygron Platform is being used by engineering consultancy firms[9] for themes such as climate resiliency,[10] urban planning and water management.[11] Furthermore, the Tygron Platform is used by various organizations for urban planning and analysis. One such company is Urban Sync, based in Leiden, Netherlands. Urban Sync uses the Tygron Platform as part of their Sync City initiative, which focuses on promoting healthy urban living.[12]

Software

The license model is based Software as a service where users get access to a private domain where they can create multiple projects.

  • The first step when creating a new project is combining several public and private geospatial data sources[13] into a single data model of the area (for example a city or region). Additional data can also be imported from ArcGIS,[14] QGIS[15] or AutoCAD[16] using wizards.
  • This data model can then be configured as input for multiple simulations models that are optimized to run on multiple GPUs using the CUDA architecture. Using Cloud computing allows the software to for example run up to 10 billion grid cells in a multi-GPU configuration for an artificial flooding event in the Netherlands.[17]
  • After the simulation has finished the result can be presented using 3D visualization in the Tygron Client[18] application, web applications or Microsoft Power BI.[19]

City planning

It was originally inspired by SimCity,[20] allowing to work with a realistic 3D world with real-life indicators taken from Geographic information system and city datasets to display the effects on the world. The Tygron Platform enables interactive modeling of urban planning issues and facilitates scenario development based on the values of different stakeholders. It allows for A combination of 'what-if' scenario planning.[21]

Flood Management and Climate Resiliency

The Tygron Platform is designed to facilitate a holistic approach to urban planning. Originally created to support decision-making in the densely developed Netherlands, much of which lies below sea level, the platform provides critical insights into water management. The Tygron Watermodule is based on the Shallow water equations,[22] which model the flow of water. This implementation allows users to simulate and evaluate the costs and benefits of different storm surge barriers, enhancing flood management and climate resilience strategies.[23]

  • The platform allows for the integration of various data sources, including real-time data, enabling comprehensive analysis of urban systems such as buildings, traffic, and climate.[24]
