Submission declined on 2 December 2024 by Chaotic Enby (talk). This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). Tsugumi Maki is an American museum director. She is the Director of the RISD Museum at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), a position she assumed in the fall of 2023.[1][2] Maki has over 25 years of experience in the museum field, holding leadership positions at major institutions across the United States.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Maki received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She received a degree in Cinema and Photography from the Park School at Ithaca College.[3]
Career
[edit]Maki began her museum career at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA Boston), where she spent nearly two decades.[3] She played a key role in the organization of the Art of the Americas Wing and new contemporary galleries during her tenure as Head of Gallery Planning.[3]
Maki then served as the Associate Director of Operations and Collections Management at the Davis Museum at Wellesley College, overseeing all collections and operational activities.[1]
Following her time at the Davis Museum, Maki became the Chief Operating Officer at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA/Boston), where she focused on strengthening the museum's institutional infrastructure.[4] This role involved overseeing staff, facilities, business development, and data systems to support the museum's strategic goals.[4]
In 2016, Maki joined the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) as the Chief Exhibitions and Collections Officer.[1][5] In this role, she oversaw the exhibitions, collection, and design programs, contributing to SFMOMA's global standing in the art world.[1][5] She successfully overhauled SFMOMA's exhibition development strategy and revamped their accession process, ensuring the thoughtful growth of the museum's collection.[3]
In the fall of 2023, Maki was appointed as the Director of the RISD Museum.[1] In an interview with RI Public Radio, Maki stated her vision for the museum as a more inclusive and welcoming space that breaks down barriers between the institution and the community. She emphasized the importance of highlighting diverse perspectives and stories, collaborating with RISD students and faculty, and engaging with contemporary issues.[2]
Other activities
[edit]Maki served as the President of the Ithaca College Alumni Board.[6] She has also been involved with ArtsBoston, an organization supporting the arts and cultural sector in Greater Boston.[7]
