Tohji (born 5th February 1996) based in Tokyo, is a Japanese hip-hop artist. He is also active as a member of the crew "Mall Boyz" , which he formed with Gummyboy and others.[1]
Biography
[edit]Born in London, England in 1996, Tohji moved to Japan at the age of 3. After moving, he lived in Yokohama City and Tokyo.[2]
Tohji’s new-wave music comes with a well-curated and idiosyncratic look. With chronically unkept hair, wraparound sunglasses, and tracksuits that are not so much worn as half-shrugged-on, the 27-year-old’s Y2K look is both potently nostalgic and cutting-edge. Recalling the vaporwave and mallsoft aesthetics of the early 2010s with its softly cyberpunkish flavour, it’s a look that is obscurely futuristic but also rooted in retro references: simultaneously familiar and hard to define.[3]
Visuals pay a very important part of Tohji's presence, in an interview with the Fader,[4] he has described himself as "the new Visual Beatles", in another interview with Office Magazine[5], when he was asked about this quote, he said, “I make a whole big swag.”
In August 2019, Tohji appeared on NTS Radio for the first time as a guest.[6] He also appeared on the station in July 2021 and June 2022.
In February 2021, Tohji teamed up with a designer DETTO K, launched a new fashion VANILLANI, which sells all with one-size-fits-all garments.[7]
In June 2022, Tohji released a mixtape t-mix, featured Bladee, Yeule, Mechatok, and more,[8] and started a summer tour in Japan.[9] On 27 August 22, Tohji released a music video of Super Ocean Man,[10] it reached 1.8 millions views.
In 2023, Tohji released a single 'Aglio e olio'.[11] On 15 June 2023, Tohji played at Sonar Festival in Barcelona, Spain.[12] In September 2023, Tohji started his tour in Japan and China, touring cities included Tokyo, Osaka, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing,[13] he sold out both Japan dates. On 24 November 2023, Tohji joined the Natural Mind Residency at Phonox in London, UK.[14]
In April and May 2024, Tohji toured in Japan, Europe and North America, touring cities included London, Paris, Los Angeles, New York and more.[15] On 18 & 19 May 2024, Tohji headlined Japan's largest hip-hop festival “POP YOURS”, at Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Hall 9-11, Chiba, the event was sold out.[16]
On 31 July 2024, Tohji released a new single 'medium rare',[17] on 15 October, a sim0ne remixed version of the track was released. [18]
