Tim Mahoney (born Feb 17, 1970) is an American lead guitarist for the multi-platinum alternative rock band 311.
Early life
[edit]Mahoney was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska.[1]
His first instrument was the trombone. He later switched to guitar. [2] [3][4]
In 1985, Mahoney started playing in various bands with friends. One of his first connections was with Chad Sexton in a band called The Bushmen. He also played in another band called The Eds with Nick Hexum. [5]
In 1987, Mahoney, Hexum and Sexton started playing together, eventually forming a band named Unity. Hexum describes this band as the beginning of the 311 sound. As they graduated highschool, Mahoney decided to head to college in AZ.[6]
In 1990, he chose to return to Omaha and joined his former band mates and newcomer Aaron Wills to round out the line-up for 311. SA Martinez was a guest vocalist in the band and was later added to the line-up in 1992. [7] [8]
311
[edit]311's birth is view as their first show together at Sokol Pavilion in June 10, 1990. Between their inception and their move to Los Angeles in early 1992, 311 released three independent albums Dammit!, Unity, and Hydroponic under their own label What Have You Records.
In 1992, the band felt they'd done all they could on the local scene and moved out to Los Angeles to pursue a record deal.Demo tapes had been sent to many record labels. It made it's way to Eddy Offord, who took interest in working with the band. This led to a record deal with Capricorn Records. In 1993, 311 released their first major label album, titled Music. [9] [10]
311 has released 14 major label records without a change in the band's line-up. They have performed over 2,000 shows in 29 countries and all 50 U.S. states. The songs down "Down", "Love Song" reached #1 on Alternative Airplay[11] along with other top 10 such as "Come Original", "Don't Tread on Me", "Creatures (For a While)" and many more.
Personal life
