Submission declined on 8 November 2024 by Ca (talk). This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of films). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.

- Comment: Please do not just copy and paste ChatGPT outputs. This draft contains fake references like https://example.com/embassy-ottawa-eventMany sections do not have citations, and has a non-neutral tone, since it written by ChatGPT. Please see WP:LLM Ca talk to me! 14:45, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Well done on creating the draft, and it may potentially meet the relevant requirements (including WP:GNG, WP:NFILM) but presently it is not clear that it does. As other reviewers have noted, Wikipedia's basic requirement for entry is that the subject is notable. Essentially subjects are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. To properly create such a draft page, please see the articles ‘Your First Article’, ‘Referencing for Beginners’ and ‘Easier Referencing for Beginners’. Please note that many of the references are not from sources that are considered reliable for establishing notability. Please note that many of the references are not formatted correctly (see Introduction to referencing with VisualEditor and Wikipedia’s Manual of Style for help). Also, if you have any connection to the subject, including being paid, you have a conflict of interest that you must declare on your Talk page (to see instructions on how to do this please click the link). Please familiarise yourself with these pages before amending the draft. If you feel you can meet these requirements, then please make the necessary amendments before resubmitting the page. It would help our volunteer reviewers by identifying, on the draft's talk page, the WP:THREE best sources that establish notability of the subject. It would also be helpful if you could please identify with specificity, exactly which criteria you believe the page meets (e.g. "I think the page now meets WP:NFILM criteria #3, because XXXXX"). Once you have implemented these suggestions, you may also wish to leave a note for me on my talk page and I would be happy to reassess. Cabrils (talk) 23:36, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

The Island of Roses, Tragedy in Paradise (Italian: L'isola delle rose, la tragedia di un paradiso) is a 2008 documentary written and directed by Rebecca Samonà. Produced with support from the National Fund for the Victims of Nazism, it is the first Italian film to narrate the deportation of the Jewish community of Rhodes.[2]
Produced with the contribution of the National Fund for the Victims of Nazism, it was the first Italian film to tell the story of the deportation of the Jews of Rhodes. [3]
Through the director's own family history, the film tells the story of the Jewish community living in Rhodes, an Italian colony, and destroyed in Auschwitz in the summer of 1944. The documentary also recalls the resistance of the Italian military to the Germans following the Cassibile armistice with the Allies, after general Pietro Badoglio announced it on the radio on 8 September 1943 (Battle of Rhodes).
Filmed in Belgium, Italy and Greece, "L'isola delle rose, la tragedia di un paradiso" has a predominantly female narration, with testimonies, archive footage, photos and diaries of the director's family and friends, including Stella Levi's.[4]
It is distributed internationally with the title of The Island of Roses, Tragedy in Paradise.[5]
Historical context
[edit]In 1912, during the Italo-Turkish War, Italy took control of the Dodecanese Islands, including Rhodes, from the Ottoman Empire. Rhodes, the capital, was celebrated as the "pearl" of the new colony. With the rise of Fascism in 1922, Mussolini sought to speed up the Italianization of the island's ethnic minorities, including Greeks, Turks, and Jews. The regime propaganda promotes the image of the "island of roses", Rhodes, as a glamorous paradise, a bridge towards the Middle East and the Italian colonial dream.
With the introduction of the Italian racial laws first, WWII and the advent of the Italian Social Republic (Repubblica di Salò), life on the island turns from paradise to tragedy for thousands of Italian soldiers (Battle of Rhodes) and for the ancient Ladino speaking Sephardic Jewish community, destroyed in Auschwitz in August 1944.

Screenings and Recognition
[edit]The documentary received significant attention in various international venues. It was screened at multiple festivals and institutions, including the Centro Primo Levi in New York, where a post-screening conversation was held with Erminia and Gloria Licitri. The film, in addition to recounting the history of the Jewish community of Rhodes, intertwines this narrative with the personal story of the director’s family, offering a unique perspective on the historical events. This personal approach helped to raise awareness about the fate of the Rhodes Jewish community globally.[9]
The documentary was also screened at the Embassy of Italy in Ottawa during the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, highlighting its cultural significance and the importance of remembering the Jewish community's tragic history during the Holocaust. This event helped to further raise awareness about the film and its subject matter among a diverse audience.[10]
